Is this normal?

Hi,

I bought a new G35 Sedan - Auto about 2 weeks ago. However, yesterday I noticed that when I am doing in above 60-70 mph on the freeway and shift the gear from the auto mode to the techtronic (manual) mode, the display on the dash shows that the gear is in 4...Shouldn't it be 5? I'm able to manually move it into 5th gear but it doesn't seem to go to 5 in the auto mode. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

That is normal. The autostick will always pick 4th instead of 5th when moving into that mode. I'm guessing as long as it's safe. I doubt it would do that if you were going 140 mph, but I haven't tried it. I actually like that logic, because shifting into autostick acts like a downshift. Very similar to my Altima. Shift the gate left (instead of right on the G) and it goes from D4 to D3.

I have a feeling that this is for when you are on the highway driving in "D" and you switch to manual mode, the computer downshifts anticipating that you are going to want the lower gear for passing. Otherwise, why would you put it in manual, anyway? (aside from boredom?)

Personally, I like this. It saves you having to move it over and then drop it down a gear.

4th gear is also the 1:1 gear so its a very safe gear for the car to be in regardless of speed

mine doesn't - stupid early 04's... it may read 4 on the dash, but that does not mean i'm in fourth. it only means i can't go into fifth without upshifting.

so when i'm doing 30, moving it over to manual mode, i stay in whatever gear i'm in.

i think this was a great improvement for the 04.5's, to give us more control over the gear box.
