I think that Hyde's explanation is closest to the truth. Infiniti is most likely just using the same components for the gear display in both versions and the USDM G35 doesn't have that feature so it never "lights" up. In ECON mode in the JDM models nothing is displayed and the 'S' is lit when Sport mode is selected. Sort of the same way the 'M' is lit when sliding the shifter over to the Manu-matic mode.
