200 mile break-in period: myth or reality?

I plan on getting my g35 6mt sedan from the irvine area if the guys up in norcal (eg sactown) don't budge on their '05 pricing. And yes I plan on driving the 400 plus miles, all I-5 freeway/highway miles, back to south sac. Any comments on this feat?

I've done it before with my 2k2 6mt maxima from huntington beach. Had it on cruise control up the 5% grade hill just north of six flags magic mountain. Engine and power still fine. I change the oil with mobil 1 super synthetic every 3000-4000 miles with nissan oem filter. Only probs i had was the maf failure @ 50k miles... now have an injen intake and it screams melodically past 4400 rpms... current milage is 57000 miles and is my daily driver.

Do you mean the myth about running your engine at a constant speed with cruise control on during the first 1,200 miles of break in being bad for the engine. Yeah thats not a myth!

I drove mine normally from the start but I didn't beat on it until about 500 miles. Infiniti tells you to take it easy for 1200 becuase if there is a defect, it will show in that amount of time and also if your taking it easy it won't be so catastrophic.

yea...running our engine constantly for a long period is bad during the break in period. Your suppose to drive a lot of city during your break in.

Try to vary your speed on the fwy......and avoid cruise/c and anything over 4k.

^^as Colin said. If it was me I would take a few of the other roads if possible so you can really vary your speed constantly. I believe that is the most important to constantly change your speeds meaning "no Cruise Control".

What is most common typical break-in period?

I wasn't sure if it was 200 or 500 miles but 1200 miles..?

I did do break-in oil change at 1000 miles on my max though....

I guess if it worked for the max, it shouldn't hurt the g35 either with the long haul drive.

I once read a posted thread (don't remember if it was this or the freshalloy forum) that you shouldn't drive a brand new car at a constant speed like on the highway before break-in period or that the rpms should vary as to allow the pistons to travel the whole length of the cylinder... Well I thought it was non-sense because the piston will travel the designed length of the cylinder no matter what rpm it is spinning at, because where else is it going to go?

There's no such thing as a variable length connecting rod or variable crankshaft is there?

Like some say, drive it like you stole it....or baby it....

The reason for a lot of smart a$$ remarks (cru where are you) is..
this has been discussed many times & there are many different opinions.

What it comes down to... if you aren't sure; follow the manual.

total myth, look at it from an engineering perspective - its the bathtub effect(all failures occur within the first year regardless of breakin). Gunned it the second I took it off the dealer lot.

FenixL1P, I did the exact same thing. I bought my car in L.A. and I live in the Bay Area. Bought it on a Saturday, drove it back (400+ miles) on Sunday. It's been almost a year now and no problems at all! I did try to vary the speed as much as I can. Drive it at 70 for a little, then 80, then 65, etc.... But I have to say it's hard to do that for over 400 miles consistantly. My car has 31,000 miles on it now and no problems. Yes, my car is a 2005 with 31,000 miles! I drive a lot because of work.

I have a clear bra on it at 2000 miles, but I did not have it when I bought the car and drove it 400 miles home. I was going to buy a regular ugly black bra but the dealer didn't have any in stock that day. As long as you keep your distance from the car in front, you shouldn't have any problems. I was lucky on the day I drove it back, there was virtually no traffic on Highway 5. So, I stayed back about a block from the car in front. LOL! I exam my car afterwards and had NO rock chips in that 400 miles. Of course, the next 1600 miles I had like 4-5 chips! So, I HIGHLY reccommend you get a clear bra installed as soon as you can.
