Engine cover bolts - dumb question

When you guys remove the engine cover long term, do you replace the bolts back into the holes? .. or do you leave the holes open.

The bolts have loose washers attached that wont slide down over the threads so i'd have to leave the washers on the bolts if I were to replace them back in the holes. I just didn't know if there's a risk of junk collecting in the holes making the bolts not seat properly if I wanted to replace the cover one day.

As long as were asking dumb questions...Just what does the top of the engine look like with out the cover? I've look at my engine many times wondering just what they are hiding with that cover and have been tempted many times to undo the bolts and take a look, but I figure I'm probably better off leaving it alone.

Anybody have pictures of there engine uncovered? Please post them if you do.

Put the bolts with washers back in the holes and tighten down gently.

+1, especially the "gently" part.

I have had my engine cover off for the past month. I simply hand tightened the 4 bolts. I don't want any stuff getting into the threads. I'll put the engine cover back on when I take my car in for service.
