Oil Change

Does anyone know what type of motor oil (brand, weight, etc.) the dealers normally put into the G when you take it to them for oil change? I am curious because for years now I've been bringing my own synthetic motor oil (Mobil1) and ask my mechanic to put in my old G20, as I like to know what goes into my car.

As a side note, is there really a significant difference between synthetic vs regular motor oil besides the fact that synthetic normally costs 3 to 4 times more?

Re: Oil Change

They use 5W-30 oil...and each dealership can use a different brand, so you need to ask your dealer. Synthetic protects better against wear, takes a lot longer to break-down, reduces emissions, leads to a smoother running engine, and some claim increases power (although, I don't really believe it does that to any extent you would notice).

Re: Oil Change

My local dealership uses Pennzoil. Yours may use something else. You can bet it's not synthetic, though, unless you're specifically paying extra for it or bringing it in yourself.

Re: Oil Change

My dealer in CA used 10-30 Quaker State. When I asked why not 5-30 as specified in the manual, he said it doesn't matter because it rarely gets that cold here. I think it probably does matter in terms of better gas mileage with the 5-30.

Re: Oil Change

Gas mileage won't be much different. They both act as a 30w when they warm up. The 5 just flows better on startup when it's cold. Probably not a big deal in CA.

The 5-20 stuff that Ford is going to is supposed to give you 1/4 mpg improvement.
