Look at it this way - when you have all-seasons, it is recommended not to place them over existing carpeted mats - primarily for safety on the driver's side mat to avoid blocking the pedals. Also keep in mind that the backing on the rubber mats will unnecessarily wear the carpeted mats. Since we love our cars so much this just seems silly, no?

Now, for me, I leave the rubber mats in all the time. My carpeted mats are in a box in the basement, brand new, ready for my buyer when I sell. I did the same thing with my previous car and believe me, the buyer appreciated that the mats were new - really blew him away and added to the fact that I kept my car so pristine.
