wow, you guys change oil a lot . it definitely won't hurt anything but is a bit much. if your running mobile 1 you can very safely go 5,000 miles, then change the filter and top off with 1 quart, and go another 5,000 miles. a lot of the german cars go over 10,000 miles without even a filter change. the sythetic oil just doesn't break down at all. as long as you keep if filtered it's fine.

You sure had alot of time to play footsies with VegasG35sedan earlier. Point being if you spent the same time researching your point, the flame war would have never happened. But alas history repeats itself yet again

But we can say for a store bought oil. Mobil 1 would be the best. But the best oil out there is Amsoil.

I'd recommend against going w/ the ASL... check out the specs:

Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 10.6

Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 57.3

Viscosity Index (ASTM D-2270) 178

CCS Viscosity @ -30°C, cP (ASTM D-2602) 5254

Pour Point °C (°F) (ASTM D-97) -51 (-60)

Flash Point °C (°F) (ASTM D-92) 228 (442)

Four Ball Wear Test (ASTM D-4172B: 40 kgf, 75°C, 1200 rpm, 1 hr), Scar, mm 0.35

Noack Volatility, % weight loss (g/100g) (ASTM D-5800) 6.6

High Temperature/High Shear Viscosity
(ASTM D 4683 @ 150°C, 1.0 X 106 s.-1), cP 3.2

Total Base Number 12.2

------------------------

If you look at a viscosity chart, you'll see that a 30weight oil goes from 9.30-12.49 @ 100 deg cel.

and a 20weight goes from 5.60-9.29 @ 100 deg cel...

according to this info the newly reformulated ASL is no good for the vq.. it's almost a 20 weight oil!!...

I'd go with something on the thicker side such as the HDD s3k:

Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445)

11.7

Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445)

67.6

Viscosity Index (ASTM D-2270)

170

Cold Crank Simulator Apparent Viscosity @ -25°C, cP (ASTM D 2602)

4997

Pour Point °C (°F) (ASTM D 97)

-51 (-60)

Flash Point °C (°F) (ASTM D 92)

230 (446)
Noack Volatility (DIN 51581) 250°C for 1 hour, % weight loss

6.7
High Temperature/High Shear Viscosity, cP, 150°C, 1.0 x 106 s-1 (ASTM D-4683)

3.6
Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D-4172: 40kgf, 150°C, 1800 rpm, 1 hr) Scar diameter, mm

0.38

Total Base Number

12.2
