2003.5 5AT Shorter Shifter Throw

Just got a chance to drive a 2003.5 sedan while my 2003 sedan was in for service. I noticed 2 things different right off the bat. 1st thing I noticed was less of a power spool up than my car with mods. Power delivery seemed more direct (not Torque per se, but timing).

2nd thing I noticed was that my 2003 manumatic shifter throw is much longer than it should be, meaning that I must push the lever all the way up or down to get to the next gear. With the 2003.5, Nissan seems to have shortened the throw and added a tap block for a more percise shifting feel.

Has anyone noticed this difference too? Guess it is at the cost of owning a 1st gen model. Wish I could make the throws shorter. Anyone have any ideas?

I noticed the shorter shifts on my loaner as well. It was noticeably less smooth than my G with the Hyper-Grounds, and maybe because it wasn't broken in yet, didn't feel as responsive. Also seemed ot run 'out of breath' a bit at higher RPMs. Except for the shorter shifts, I preferred my older G.

My son just asked to see my profile. By coincidence, that last post just made me Pooh-Bah!

I think I'll go change my self, If I can only find the diapers.

Did notice the roughness around the edges in the engine area. Also seemed like the darn thing took forever to start up. The smoothness of my G can all be attributed to my Gordon Gee Grounding kit. Thanks Gord.

Whoops, I guess I can't edit myself. Would one of my fellow mods please oblige?

Re: 2003.5 5AT Shorter Shifter Throw

Mike, It sounds like Nissan has changed the manumatic shifter throw over to the Coupe style. I noticed that when I went from my Garnet Sedan to my Coupe. The Coupe is a shorter throw and a single movement as opposed to the 2 step (detent) shift in the early Sedans.
Most guys don't notice the difference or it doesn't matter to them, but I prefer the short throw. It grows on you real quick.

Hey, Mike. Have you had a chance to dyno your car? Do you still like the HKS exhaust? Thanks.

The new shifter is much better. Is there any way to upgrade an old one? My dealer said no, but I don't think they even looked in to it.

Dan,

Haven't got around to dynoing my ride. May be awhile though. I will post the numbers when I do.

Re: 2003.5 5AT Shorter Shifter Throw

Mark,

My service manager said that I would have to replace the whole shifting mechanism to get it done. I don't believe him though. Should be a simple modification. I need to get an ESM before tearing into my own shifter. Anything can be done with $$
