G35 Fun/Funny/Cool

I started this thread so people can post pictures of anything they did in or to their G35 that was fun, funny, or cool.

The real thread is in the coupe section. I urge all Sedan owners to check it out as well.

Here's to the most fun you can have sitting down... Solo2 Autocross!

That's my Desert Platinum G35 Sedan. The red car to the left is a Ferrari 360. The Red & Yellow thing is a completely stripped and race-prepped Plymouth Laser (Mitsubishi Eclipse twin).

Interior under dash and center console lighting that beats to music. The lights that light up the radio are connected to the under dash light so they're in sync! (no pun intended - I like N'Sync but not that much)

Re: G35 Fun/Funny/Cool

Just fine. It's not like taking it to the track.

Solo2 is a short, tight course. Speeds don't generally exceed 60mph (I have yet to hit the rev limiter in 2nd on the automatic), and the course only lasts from around 40-80 seconds. So, the brakes don't really have a chance to overheat, and then they generally have at least 10-15 minutes to cool before the next run.

Ryoken,

Is that Jack Murphy? I am in San Diego too. When do they have these Autocross races? I have a 2003.5 BS AT Sedan w/Sprt pkg. Only have 850 miles so far..... after I cross the 1200 miles mark I may head down there.

Another crappy day in paradise....

Re: G35 Fun/Funny/Cool

Yes, I'm a member of the SCCA. (Because joining gets you a discount on the event fees, and I plan on doing it often enough to recoup the membership fee.)

Yes, it's at the stadium formerly known as Jack Murphy. (Qualcomm Stadium for the rest of you.) Next event is October 5th in the West Lot. The West Lot is best, as it's pretty large (in fact, it's considered one of the best autocross locations in the country, due to it's size, I hear). The Northeast and Southeast lots are smaller, but smaller is better than not at all. http://www.sdr-scca.com/solo2/

mwh_dev: That's what I drive, too, and auto with the sport package. Although, I also have the winter pkg, and the Bridgestone Turanza tires rather suck at holding a dry corner -- can't wait for them to wear out so I can replace them with some summer rubber.

Re: G35 Fun/Funny/Cool

I put carbon fiber sticker from Walmart in the lower bumper grill lines to make it look like two holes. My cheap version of the Nismo bumper. I think this is pretty funny actually. You can call me "rice" if you want...haha!!

Re: G35 Fun/Funny/Cool

From a more recent autocross event, here are some better pictures. I used a 35mm with the 300mm zoom lens instead of the digital camera, and then got the Kodak picture cd processing.

Re: G35 Fun/Funny/Cool

royken,
I checked out the local Houston chapter of SCCA and they
have solo I and solo II autocross events. I am seriously
considering entering my car as a novice. Novice status allows
for runs with an instructor to learn about this event. Do you
do the solo I or solo II ? It looks like alot of fun. Are there any
dangers I need to look out for? Like insurance? Any
enlightment would be appreciated.
TIA
cato

Re: G35 Fun/Funny/Cool

Solo2. The difference is in the course and the speeds. It's hard to hit 60mph in Solo2, the courses tend to be tighter. Solo1 is faster, with larger, straighter courses -- closer to a road course. Solo2 is probably the better place to start out.. slower speeds, less chance of wrecking your car. It's pretty safe.. though not 100%. If you damage your car, you may want to avoid mentioning autocross to your insurance company.. they won't want to cover damages you cause through racing. The G35 is pretty forgiving, though.. I have yet to actually spin out and go off course, though I have slammed the brakes and slid into a couple of cones.

Due to the fact that you have a modified intake, you're not eligible for stock classes. Your car would probably be in STX, or in some local class for street-legal cars that aren't competitive in the Prepared classes. Definately enter as a novice for as long as they let you and have an instructor ride along, it'll get you to a decent level much quicker than trying to go it alone (San Diego Region allows you to enter as a novice 3 times). I've been doing this all year now, and I just had an instructor along for a ride again on Sunday (during X (extra) runs, not my competition runs). Show up early and attend the Novice driver's meeting if there is one, and do the Novice course walk (where an instructor takes you around the track and explains it, instead of just walking it yourself). That's important, since nobody gets a practice run.. you only get to walk the course before your timed runs.

Also, read this: Solo2 Novice Handbook

Have fun! If you have questions while you're there, ask anyone. The Solo2 crowd is a pretty social group of people.
