Another Case of Dealer BS?

I just went in for an oil change at about 21,500 miles. I have used the regular oil the dealer uses since I bought it when it had 1,900 miles on it. I brought sythentic oil for them to use and the guy told me not to put it in because it will ruin the car!! He claimed that if I wanted to put synthetic in that I should've done it a lot earlier, mileage wise.

He said that since the engine is already broken in that switching to synthetic will cause the pistons, etc.. extra wear because the sythentic will break down the regular oil and blah blah blah. He was going on and on and sort of scared me away from putting the synthetic in. What's the deal???? Any thoughts???

Well you can look at it two ways:

1) You can believe him blindly. Which would be false
2) Do you own research in addition to asking here and inform yourself on whether the information is BS or not.

You can read ALOT of information here. Particularly the stickies. It's for a maxima but the information is valid regardless of car/engine.

I did my research. That's why I brought my synthetic oil in the first place. But I guess reading some more won't hurt...ill check your link out.

He's one in a million that thinks that.....
Most I've talked to have said to wait to between 10k & 20k for the engine to completely break in, and then switch to synthetic.
don't be put off.

that is BS. from the start we use a semi-synthetic oil so people have the option to use regular or full synthetic. the VQ motors run best when you switch to synthetic after 15k - 20k miles b/c it's finally fully broken in.

i work at a dealership so i'm suprised they told you that

yeah the tech definitely sounds like a wind bag.

I checked the service manual and the owners manual and neither state anything about dino or synthetic rather they illustrate the SAE rating based on range of operating temp.

at least for the 05 Sedan this is what they say:
SAE 5W-30 viscosity oil is preferred for all temperatures.

SAE 10W-30 and 10W-40 viscosity oil may be used if the ambient temperature is above -18°C(0°F)

Just for the fun of it..........

Ya know just for the fun of it you should go back to
this dealership and ask the dude "Where do you get
your information"? Then you can tell him that he's
full of $hit! Sounds like "Fun" to me.......

had mobil 1 full synthetic in my 2k2 6spd max since the day it ran 1k miles... will do the same for my g35 too.... although when i did take my g in for the 1200 mile break-in oil change (brought my own mobil 1 full synth. and napa gold oil filter), the oil change service manager said to wait till after 7500 miles.... the service tech told me the vq shouldn't get any synthetics until 10k miles.... i just told them, "You gonna change the oil or what? By the way the maxima still purrs quietly after 60k miles on it...

Exactly what I did with my G except my first change was at 2200. The service writer didnt want to put in the M1 5W/30 I brought either. Said the motor wasnt broken in yet. When I told him I had had it up to 140 MPH for 5 minutes coming across Nevada he realized it was broken in. Got 65K now and runs perfect. Nothing but M1 5W/30 every 7500.

It wasnt the actual Tech. I guess he was the Advisor who prepares the paper work etc..

haha he also tried saying that my back center brake light is not covered under warranty. The bulbs or one of them needs replaced. Then he came back and said that because my rear center brake light is the LED strip kind, then thats covered.

Found this on a different automotive site.

"Synthetic oils tend to disolve deposits better than conventional mineral based oils. The deposits from combustion and the mineral oil itself and some other things CAN lead to sludge in an engine. Carbonizing and coking are a major item especially in turbo charged or super charged engines due to extreme heat in those type of chargers. Those types of engines should always use 100% synthetic oil. Conventional aspiration engines can use either, HOWEVER, I recomend staying with what the engine started out using. If you are going to switch to synthetic, do it before you get to many miles on it, say approx under 20,000. This way if you were useing conventional oil, changed every 3 to 4 months and at 3,000 to 4,000 miles, there should be no problem of sludge or deposits enough in the engine to worry about. A bigger issue though, in the long run would be, exactly are you trying to accomplish with this engine. You have to way the cost, about 3 to 4 times more expensive than conventional (mineral based) oils. If you got this car new or say under 20,000 miles and are going to attempt to run it for 250,000 miles, then go ahead. But a majority of people will get rid of their car before they get 150,000 miles. The very slight advantage in MPG gained by using synthetic and how long you intend to keep it, may not be worth the extra cost. I know you can run some snythetics up to 15,000 miles, but I don't now anyboby that really does, so theres that expense thing again. I know people will dispute what I just said, but its a matter of mathematics and the fact there are tons of cars and trucks that never saw a drop of synthetic oil that ran well over 300,000 miles with out an oil related problem, as long as they changed oil and filter at intervals I mentioned above. Remember, we didn't have anything but conventinal oil 20 years ago to chosse from and many big rigs logged over 500,000 miles without major wear on and engine, even running "dirty" diesel!"

I guess he is saying that regular oils leave deposits that synthetic oils would usually clean off with the better properties of synthetic oil. I don't know what is right or wrong, just posting some information to take into consideration.
