As I remember, 5W30: 5 Stands for the resistence to low temperature, and 30 stands for the viscocity level of the liquid (the higher # the more viscous the fluid)

5W30 is good to all states. 10W30 should be good for warmer climates. So technically 10W30 should be cheaper than 5W30 since you are not paying for the reistence to lower temperature; however, that the price difference is not always the case.

Yes, 10w-30 is ok. It even states that in the owner's manual. I think even 10W-40 is ok if ambient temp is above freezing. Again that is also in the owner's manual.

I've been using Mobil1 10w30 for the past 24,000 miles and no problems so far. As long as you're in the temp range stated in the manual you should be ok.

Should be fine. I'd even go 10W-40 in Vegas .

What mileage should you switch over to synthetic oil?

Good question. Some do it immediately without consideration for break-in, others wait until the first oil change (I do), yet others wait 10k.

My dealer recommends waiting 10k. if that helps.

10w-30 is definitely fine for our dry and hot climate. In the winter, we will only drop to the freezing mark 1 or 2 days out of the entire season.

However, I purchased 5W-30 Mobil because it was the only thing available when I purchased oil for my self oil change.

I live in Phoenix, AZ and my dealer even sells Mobil 1 Syn 10-30. They say it is better if you drive your car hard in the summer time.

does synthetic oil make a difference in "power" or the way the engine acts? i know that synthetic oil will help your car last "longer". but if i change my oil with conventional oil every 3k, wont my engine last just as long? what is so special about synthethic i just dont understand. will the synthetic make my engine more powerful in a way? i push my car really hard but then i always check my tire pressure/blah blah and i ALWAYS change my oil ever 3k on the dot! i'm totaly lost. my 10k is coming up really soon.

nah for you it probably won't make a difference since you change your oil at 3k intervals. The main benefit (to me anyways) is that you can extend your change interval a little bit longer. I use Mobil1 and change at 5k intervals, I just wanted to extend my changes so I didn't have to do it every other month. Car feels exactly the same and I get the same mileage, don't expect any performance out of it.

10-30 is fine in Vegas.
Run 10-30 in the warmer months (June-September)
Run 5-30 the rest of the year.

I wouldn't run 10-40, no reason too really, the 10-30 is great for
the hot weather and the 10-40 is just thicker oil.
