Is G35S running stable in high speed?
#17
I've only had my G for a few weeks and I haven't driven over 100 yet but I found when accelerating from 60 mph, that 90 mph is like, 2 secs away and the car feels like a jet powered freight train. It definitely likes to go fast (as do I) and is likely very stable at speed. I guess I'll be finding out soon enough but not with my wife. She was punching me and yelling to slow down at 90. I was laughing too much to concentrate on the road so I'll just have to do it alone.

To answer your question - Yes!, you will be at redline in 5th gear at 155 MPH. As a matter of fact, I am at redline at 145 MPH in 5th BUT, fortunately for me, then I just shift it into 6th
Sidelight - Don't know what all this talk about "instability" in high winds, at high speeds, in the rain, etc. is all about. When my car was 2 months old (1300 miles), I took it from the SF Bay Area to Boise, Idaho, running 94 MPH at least 1/3 of the way (that's the cruise control limit - I'm lazy , and I drove at night, with very little traffic). Was raining and storming hard most of the way, and this car was stable like a rock. Only one "hairy" moment, when I entered a long sweeping right hand turn marked for 60 MPH, and I wasn't paying attention as this was the first curve in about 40-50 miles. Wind and rain were coming down hard, so I just held firm and steady at 94 MPH, leaving the cruise alone and just holding my line, trying to not upset the balance of the car. With the wind, driving rain, and the curve, I was at the limit of traction, and I could feel the back end bobble a bit, real close to "stepping out" on me.That's the only really scary thing that's happened, and it was caused by driver inattention/error.
Being long but relatively narrow, it responds to steering inputs rather quickly, and it's easy to get the weight shifting around - smoothness is the key with this car, IMHO.

If you do the math --
With a final gear ratio of 3.357:1 for the sedan w/5AT (per Infinitihelp.com, I think) and an engine redline at 6700 rpm (sedan) the redline puts the rear axle turning 33.26 rev/sec. If you've got stock 215/55R17 tires, at redline you'll be making 156.22 mph. If you have stock 18" tires (245/45R18), the outer tire circumference is just a tiny bit bigger and top speed at redline should be 156.31 mph. Now if you have 18" wheels with a higher sidewall height ratio (50 or larger), of course the outer circumference of your tire will be larger and the same axle speed will result in a little bit faster car. For example, for a set of 235/50R18 tires, top speed at redline should be 161.81 mph.
This is all presuming the car isn't drag-limited at high speed, but with the low Cd it has, I doubt that it is.
