Raced a Camaro SS!!!

Hi all,

Just a quick post here which I put uup in a few other posts today just as bragging rights. Came to a stoplight today and a 2001 Camaro SS pulls up next to me. Killed my AC and radio and the light turns green. We both go and the Camaro punches it. I stay right along side up to 65 MPH!!!! This car has a 346CI or 5.7 liter V8 based on the 2001 Corvette engine!!! I kept up with him and got a lot of thumbs up from them! I should have been smoked as the SS does 0-60 in 5.2! There were 2 passengers in the car as well as the driver. I didn't smoke him. I didn't get smoked either. I'd say this was a good accomplishment for the G as the SS is truly american muscle!

I'm not calling you a liar, but I think you should race another SS or Z28 and see what happens. Those things run low 13's off the showroom floor with a decent driver...

...uh... what next? going head to head with a ferrari 360 modena?? sorry but being a g35driver myself, i can't believe that story. there is no way a g35 can beat a SS camaro or even hang. perhaps you have mistaken the SS for the base v6? or perhaps the driver can't drive worth jack? hmmm... sorry~

Take it easy on chiphead. He did not say he smoked the SS, just that he stuck with him. Even if it was not a true race, it obviously got the adrenaline going.

I'm with you IronCity - give this guy a break. He only said he kept pace with the SS. Maybe the SS driver didn't know what he was doing, maybe he didn't give it all he had. Either way, chiphead got props from the people in the SS and had the personal satisfaction - that's the real story here.

It's completely believeable. The SS is dragging 300-400lbs extra weight plus they really don't start really hauling butt till around 65-70mph.

You guys really need to go to the track and get some seat time before making assumptions that an LS1 is unbeatable. I've beaten LS1 F-Bodys in the 1st 1/8 mile only because I either had a slightly better reaction time and/or slightly better 60'. Once I pass the 1/8 mile (~75mph) marker they go flying by and pull about 4-6 cars on me by the end. If the LS1 has a similiar 60' and reaction time, they usually get about 2-3 cars on me by the 1/8.

Reaction time and you're ability to get off the line means everything. Simply reacting .2 quicker (hard to gauge with the eye) than your opponent can give you a big advantage.

Re: Raced a Camaro SS!!!

Exactly, the SS had two additional people. Even though it's 0-60 is 5.2 or lower, with the 300+ extra pounds, it's pulling more therefore slower. I was impressed at the reaction the SS owner gave me and he was impressed with my performance. I dragged an SS once on the highway doing 70 and he blew by me without any difficulty. It's not that I beat this car, killed it, smoked it, whatever. I kept pace and earned some respect out there with other car enthusiests. You guys, don't sell the G short! It's quick when it wants to be. I've seen Lexus IS300's keep up with me at speed and I had the AC on, the radio on, and my kid in the back. If you read my profile, I've got the Stillen intake, 350Z duct, and ground kit going so you best believe it, I kept up! The SS driver was probably in his 50's and his teenage kids were riding with him. I wouldn't say the driver didn't know what he was doing!

I had a Z28 (eventually heavily modded) before I got my G, and believe me, even with 4 people in the car, a G35 would be no match. To say they don't haul butt until 65-70mph is just plain dumb. They make so much torque they'll pin you to the seat until 65-70 mph. They trap @ 105-108mph bone stock! I love my G( I sold my Z28 to get it!) but let's not get crazy here. If Chiphead says he didn't get smoked, then fine. My point is in a heads up race, no passengers, 2 competent drivers, the G loses....

Re: Raced a Camaro SS!!!

Props dude, His SS might not have been running so good or there were 2 big peeps in there with him, but it sure sounded like he was trying to beat you.
I think as gaklid said tho, if his SS was running right and driven right, it should beat the G fairly easily.
I'm amazed at the performance of our G's for sure, but to beat a (stock) SS would be almost impossible with all his torque. Low 5 second 0-60 is PDQ. Heck so is 6 seconds for our 6 cylinders, but the SS's 300 ft lbs from near idle is too much for our G's.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Re: Raced a Camaro SS!!!

I beat an SS at the track. needless to say they didn't want to talk to me afterwards

The driver had a slow 2-3 shift, not missed but slow. She ran a 14.4x to my 14.5x but my reaction time was a bit faster so I won.

we are close enough that if they make one mistake, they lose. On the other hand if we make one mistake, we get smoked.

and yes 14.2 or so is the best that car ran that night (1700 ft alt., 100 degrees after sundown)

I had a 13.4 second 94 Z28 auto prior to owning my Maxima so I'm fully aware of the capabilities of the L98/LT1/LS1 350-346 cu. inch motors. True, the LS1 is a beast, but it really doesn't put of the real hurt on most other lower 14 second cars until around 65-70mph. That was my point. Their massively flat and thick torque curve teamed with linear HP gives them massive topend acceleration. Load up an SS with an extra 400lbs of weight (2 people) and it's power to weight ratio goes from about 12:1 down to 13:1. The G35 6 speed is about 15:1. Factor in the LS1s lack of traction off the line in most cases and you've got a close race to 50-60mph. Seriously, a race to 60mph only let's a 6 speed LS1 use a fraction of it's second gear (1st to 45mph). Not until the LS1 gets into the heart of it's power in 2nd will it really pull away which occurs around 70mph. That's my point and that's why the race was close.

Re: Raced a Camaro SS!!!

And from IROC memories of past, they feel a helluva lot faster off the line than they are. The SS prob IS fast and feels even faster than the IS is.

anybody seen bill clinton??
