Fuel gauge, precise reading?
The needle was literally all the way down, pointing at the third line from the bottom. Took her to Chevron, was filling the car up hands-free and at 14.9 gallons the nozzle topp'ed off indicating I had a full tank (I'm guessing each line represents somewhere around 1 gallon)?
Anyways, so I start the car up and get this:


Are these types of readings common for our cars (I have an 06).
I drove an Audi before the G and never got anything like this...

Yea, I fill up, almost always, at the 1/8 mark. I have been adding around 16-17 gallons. I'm not quite sure if every mark equals a gallon though. It does seem I get the same amount of miles traveled from just over full to 3/4 than I get from 3/4 to 1/2 driving the same rate of speed. And the needle begans to fall quickly after 1/2. I just try to base my reserve fuel by the number of miles I have gone. I usual travel the same road every day at around the same rate of speed so I can tell when I need gas. I have never realy trusted gas hands too much. Sounds stupid, but hey, the way gas prices are creeping up, I have to watch my miles and not my gas gauge.
The manual says there's a "reserve" of fuel beyond "E." I don't think anyone's really pushed thier luck though to see just how large it happens to be.
Would the "true" amount of fuel be a statistic available on an ODBII diagnostic handheld? I know they can get various sensors from around the car, but don't own one so I can't go poking around.

When my light goes on near empty and I get it filled with automaitic cut off, it usually takes 17 gallons, meaning there are 3 left-a fair amount of miles. My gauge usually goes over the Full mark when auto filled.
Here in NJ we are not capable of filling our own tanks (it is against the law) so the attendant does it and they no longer go past auto shut off. One of the reasons is, that if it gets too high in the neck it may get into the charcoal cannister and saturate it, setting off an error code and possibly requiring replacement of the cannister.

My car also fills up to above F. I have noticed that the fuel consumption is pretty linear, meaning that despite filling up above Full each 1/4 of the tank still gives me roughly the same amount of mileage.
I've filled up right at E a few times and the car has taken 18 gallons. Since we have a 20 gallon tank I guess that means we have 2 gallons reserve.

my 2003 has a 18 gallon tank including the 2 gallons of reserve, and the light goes on with 2 gallons left and 16 down. I just filled up about an hour ago and put in 17.33 gallons of 92 Octane at 3.0509/gallon

That's what I needed to know. So when using the automaitic cut off, it still CAN go above like the way it did in my case. I thought I had a potential problem but looks like nothing is wrong.
