Removing Thrid Brake Light?

Hey All-

I want to get my '04 G sedan tinted. However, I don't want the tint guy to go around my 3rd brake light and thus i should remove it before I go in. I noticed that in order to remove the brake light, I have to take out the whole rear parcel shelf? If so, can anybody provide me with pictures with instructions on how to do this. perhaps someone can scan the shop manual with instructions? Thanks a bunch.

A good tinter does not need to remove the brake light. My tinter had a tool that went between the glass and the brake light just fine and it was done. The ones that are lazy are the ones that don't do the brake light. I would stay away from shops like that.

I don't know...I've seen this guys work and he does a good job. He has also tinted several of my friends cars and it all turned out great. My friends also needed to take their third brake light out which was a bit easier in their cars as they don't have to take out the whole rear shelf.

Anyone can do a good job on just TINT. It's the ones that have lots of experience are the ones that don't have a problem with stuff like 3rd brake light.

I can tint a car and I have very little experience.

Perhaps I agree with you. However, I still need instructions on how to take out the rear shelf.

Have the person who is tinting your G do it. When I had my G tinted, I requested that the brakelight be removed and tinted behind it. The tinter did as i requested and it sure looks sharp. I have seen some other G's where the brakelight was tinted around.

the guy that did my tint just slid the tint between the brake light and the window and then he used a tool to get it to stick to the window to avoid bubbles. looks great. no need for the brake light to be removed.

How about a tool to clean behind the brake light? I still haven't figured that out, at least to clean it well anyway. I was told the reason they cut around the light was due to the laws here, don't see too many that are tinted behind the light, on any brand......................

WTF?! there is no way you have to remove the brake light to get the whole back window tinted... G35_TX is right you should DEF stay away from a tint shop like that

Answer:

Take it somewhere else and stop asking the question.

Once you remove that shelf, it will most likely rattle.

I have my window tinted w/ the third brake light cut out. I just put on a decklid spoiler w/ LED's, so now I want it covered.

I called the tint shop. (tints for all the higher line dealers in ABQ) They too confirm no need to remove the third brake light.

Will they have any difficulty removing the tint Shred? Someone at the Tint Factory was who told me they had to leave the light untinted.

I spoke with Esteban at the Tint Factory. He said they apply a chemical to the tint, then let it sit in the sun 1/2 day. It makes it easier to remove the tint with out scraping. He also stated he had a tool to apply tint behind the third brake light. I offered to remove the rear package tray for him, but he declined.

I hope it turns out nice...
