My 350Z was recently written off, and my replacement needs to have a baby seat for a future family addition, so I'm trying to decide if my forthcoming G35 sedan should be ordered with the 5AT or 6MT tranny.
I drove the 5AT sedan and a 6MT coupe last night, and was impressed with both. The 6MT was just like my old Z's (albeit a bit smoother with a lighter clutch and a heavier flywheel), but the 5AT was about the best auto I've ever driven (next to the VW DSG).
I don't do a lot of performance driving... mostly low-speed inner-city commuter stuff... but when I do get stuck in gridlock on the odd freeway run, the clutch tends to be cumbersome.
Please help me choose!

well in your case I would get 5AT... because you are not as performance oriented and in a case you need power you will still get it , right?
and one more thing... your wife will get a good chance to drive the G too
and in general AT are more family oriented tha MT... smoother ride for the baby too

Bought the 5AT. Love it. 95 percent of the performance with none of the vibration or clutch complaints you continually read about here.
I've driven a mix of manuals and autos over the years, and this auto doesn't disappoint. I bought auto for the same reasons you mention.

I really enjoy my 5at, but if the x came w/ 6 speed...hmmm
Like the above poster mentioned, 95% of the performance. 5at/6mt stay neck & neck (if the 6mt knows how to drive) up to about 60/70 mph. After that, I hear the 6mt starts to pull away.
In your case (traffic & not a lot of hard driving) I'd go 5at. Regardless of what many 6mt drivers say, the manumatic is fun on the twisty roads.
Either way, get the sport package. (Standard on the 6mt?) I really wish that was an option on the x!

This is my first auto, and for an auto it is great. However I am looking at the same thing 06/07 sedan, and I will probably by a MT.

Ever try reaching in the back to put the baby's bottle in his/her mouth while driving with a manual transmission? Its not fun.... I would go with the Automatic. Actually if you can, I would wait for the 07' automatic with the paddle shifters...
Good Luck on your decision

Wait for the '07 sedan, and get a 6mt....or if you get a 5at on the '07 it's going to have paddle shifters.

Can't wait... I'm driving a Hyundai rental car now, and I'm sure as heck not going to drive that this summer! Originally Posted by MikeyMike

Plus, there's really good deals to be had on '06s now that the '07 has been announced.

Infiniti's do a great job with the autos. you wont be dissapointed, but I have seen a fair share of 6mt's with babyseats in the back.

Nope, Im single with no kids, was just using it as an example as to why to get 5AT. Everytime I see a parent with a kid in a car seat in the back go by there usally got one arm back there doing something, So I would imagine with a 6MT it would be more dangerous then if they had a 5AT... although doing that with either transmission is probably dangerous but so is talking on cell phones and prentending to be in the Indy 500 and cutting through traffic, but I see idiots doing that everyday.Originally Posted by Ivory056MT

Anyone who voted "Get the 6MT. I have the 5AT and wish I bought stick.", can I ask why you're not happy with the 5AT?
