Buying an '06 G35 Sedan - should I get 5AT or 6MT?
coming from a guy whos previous cars were mostly manuals (BMW's, Audi's, Maxima's) even my rather "sluggish" (compared to the later model year) auto is satisfying. It has enough power and it upshifts well.

So far...
Of all the 5AT voters (29 voters), 41% (12 voters) wish they got the 6MT.
Of all the 6MT voters (31 voters), 16% (5 voters) wish they got the 5AT.
It appears that more 5AT buyers regret not getting 6MT than vice-versa.
Interesting...........
More comments welcome!

I voted that I have a 5AT but wish I had a 6MT. I think really for me it just comes down to the fun factor. Last week a buddy of mine took me for a ride in his S4. Just watching him shift gears made me a little jealous.
With that being said, I don't have anything negative to say about the 5AT, the manumatic works pretty well in my opinion its just not quite the same.

Wifey can't drive a stick so I opted for the AT. Overall I'm happy with it, but there are a few times I'd like the 6MT. If I regret anything it's the stock suspension, but I didn't care much for the look of the 18s. I wonder if anyone has the 17s matched with the sport suspension.....
I have not driven a manual other than occasionally for 23 years, and when I did drive a standard, it was in a work pickup, a large truck (not a pickup), and for a couple weeks a Civic. Never anything nice like the G35
I'm slowly thinking I may want to buy at least 1 more manual, just to give them a try again. It isn't like I spend an hour in city traffic a day.

I drove the 5AT sedan and a 6MT coupe last night, and was impressed with both. The 6MT was just like my old Z's (albeit a bit smoother with a lighter clutch and a heavier flywheel), but the 5AT was about the best auto I've ever driven (next to the VW DSG).
I don't do a lot of performance driving... mostly low-speed inner-city commuter stuff... but when I do get stuck in gridlock on the odd freeway run, the clutch tends to be cumbersome.
Please help me choose!

When I'm eating, talking on the cell phone, and changing my cd's, it is kind of tough driving the 6mt - j/k
I I knew I wanted a 6mt from the start. I am more interested in the performance than the luxury. If you do not have a strong desire to rip around throwing gears, then get the auto. The auto is nice to just sit back and enjoy the drive. The stick is more tricky to drive but that's part of the fun. I also love the direct feel. With an auto, there is always some hesitation.

I passed on the 6MT for the following reasons:
1) A had gotten a bit tired of the shifting with my Maxima that I had for 6 years
2) I knew I'd be moving to Atlanta which has God aweful traffic
3) The G/Z 6MT has a horrible reliability record
4) The two 6MTs I drove reminded me exactly why I grew tired of my Maxima's 5MT. You could feel grainy vibration through the clutch and shifter and it wasn't a smooth manual to drive unless you were beating on it. I also didn't like the noisy dual mass flywheel....the noise which Nissan considers "normal".
5) The 5AT gives up hardly anything in the straightline and actually feels a little stronger from 0-60 during normal and spiriuted driving.
Once Nissan finds a different 6MT vendor and I'm not living in Atlanta, I may reconsider the 6MT.

[What that actually means, is she hates it when I drive fast, which means I'm lurching her about the cabin as I bang through the gears and the corners.]

Guys... Thanks for all the input.
My choice is unfortunately being made for me... not by the wife, but by the fact that there is not a single M6 available in Canada right now (in stock) and I'm not willing to wait for a special order.
I'm sure I'll be happy with the 5AT, since I'm getting it fully-loaded (including Sport suspension and Navi) so I'll have lots of toys and great handling to keep me occupied.
Now if an M6 just happens to show up in someone's dealer inventory................

Get the AT.
My previous car was the BMW 330 coupe with auto/Steptronic. I thought it would be cool to have a 6MT this time. It was cool . . for a week and it got kinda boring afterward.
The G35 MT is not very smooth, you can try to drive it smooth but it takes some practice and even then the car is never that smooth. Very annoying especially if you have a girl next to you. And you can only hold her hand or fondle her breasts until the next gear change (even more annoying). Finally, if you plan on talking on the phone, don't even think about it. And I'm not even talking about 15 min conversations. We're just talking about calling in and checking your messages.
As far as performance, forget those magazine numbers. In real life traffic races, the AT will win most of the time since all you have to do is floor it and go. While the MT guy has to turn off traction control (a button that's underneath the dash and hard to see), put in first gear, rev up to 3k, and drop the clutch, then trying hard to minimize wheel spin, and hope that you did not mess up any of the previous steps. If you did, you wish you never race the other guy in the first place. But realistically, you don't even do that on a race. Since most races come very unexpectedly, you don't have time to do all that preparations.
Good luck.
