I don't find this very suprising.

I've raced both my friends e46 330i's many times, and on average I only slowly put some distance on them...def not a huge win.

So I can imagine the newer faster 330i would be either even with me, or faster.

Talking

Tonigt I went for it at the stop lights with a 06 BMW 330XI. He thinks he is fast but he was smelling my exhaust. He was at least 3 car lengths behind me. I think if I do a better launch via loading up the revs, I think I should be able to better a BMW 330i. Love my Z..ah...I mean G35x.

When I had my automatic, I would hit the gas and the car would just sit for at least half a second. I HATED that lag. I don't think you can get rid of it unless you bring the RPM's up to about 2,000 or 2,500 and keep your left foot on the brake. That should help your launch a great deal.

I have to agree - I just traded my 5AT for a stick for this reason. Granted this car already has an Ingen CAI, this car is a definite beast compared to my old automatic...Even with VDC of off, I didn't feel the car pulling anywhere near as hard as the manual. Granted, launch technique counts for alot, I'm thinking I'm at least a half second faster to sixty. Also, my wheels have played a big part in throttle response. When I switched to some lighter SSRs the car seemed alot quicker than with the stock 18" inchers, although your car may have lighter wheels

I stopped worrying about 6MT's when I scorched a Z twice in one day at the track. A good AT laucher will win 90 out of 100 times. I see it over and over.

As far as the feel of the pull by an auto or 6mt. Wouldn't most agree that the 5AT will feel stronger becasue of torque multiplication? This is not like the old days where you get a 1 second loss to the crappy auto option.

you can't judge anything on the street unless it is a official street race with a judge and both parties agreeing to the terms of the race. Just "going for it" at a red light means nothing as either party may be unsure and apprehensive.

bmw 330 series vs g35

I had an 01 330xi auto until 2 years ago when I got my 04 g35x. The sport mode the bimmer has on its transmission is awesome! The g35 will beat it 0-60 and 0-100... but the bimmers inline 6 is strong at any speed so if your cruising at like 65mph and floor it, that thing takes off whether its just regular auto mode or sport mode! The g35 loses out there and would lose out in the open highway. I've experienced that from both drivers seats. Don't get me wrong, I love my G but there is something about that bimmer engine that makes it feel more powerful and quick than cars that are rated 50-60 hp more than the bimmer. Maybe they do understate their hp?

I'm very confident that the torque that gets the G from 0-100 in 1-2 seconds faster than a 330 would also be the torque that keeps the G right there or in front on the highway. The 3 feels like a dog after driving the G. The thrust the VQ produced is unmatched by the old 330 and perhaps equaled in the new one. Why does the G have to live up to the 3. I believe it's BMW having to offer turbos to keep up with their competition that speaks to the competition that exists - finally.

Just my experience. Stock for Stock, I've pulled on a few AT G35's pretty substantially from 60-100. So much so, that I thought that the guys cars were malfunctioning. I have an 05 and he had an 03 AT. I think that combination of factors gave me the edge on top end (more horses).

for under $2k you can do a "completely safe" nitrous set up .. round $1,200 or so... or for $2k... you could buy about 20 cases of stickers
