Ethanol! First Tank
It is good, it's a renewable energy resource, however, it's energy "return" for the amount it takes to produce it is very low. For oil, it's about 1 to 10 (i.e. for each BTU that is used to produce it, you get 10 BTU in return), for Ethanol, it's closer to 1:3. Then on top of that it takes a LOT more of it to equal a gallon of gas. So, as you said, it's really not such a big deal.
If you really want to know the future of energy you need to see THIS site. The future is NOT good.
This guy is NOT some nut job, this information has been presented before congress and you would have thought that we would have done something by now. Such is life in the US congress.

I don't think the ethenol is in fuel here in Oklahoma yet, at least I haven't seen signs.
I used to think that it helped on gas mileage. The best gas mileage I ever had with one car, about 14 years ago, was on a trip through Nebraska. I had nearly 35mpg, on a tank with ethenol, and never even got 32mpg any other tank ever over 6+ years.
Maybe it technically reduces mileage, but I've made several trips up to Nebraska to visit an ill relative, and the gas mileage variations are all within the noise. Direction of the wind, how aggressively I drive, all drown out variations I can blame on the gas.

Eventually, cars will be able to handle about 85% ethanol.
C.
Reminder. If your car does not explicitely state support for E85, do NOT use it. It is too corrosive, and confuses the sensors. One tank may not damage your engine, but more can mess things up.
The G35 will support up to 10%.
