Ethanol! First Tank

Well I stopped by the Shell station to fill up the other day and saw the "Ethanol" sign for the first time. They also have a smaller one that states that the products might contain up to 10% ethanol.

I've seen the studies and everyone is mixed on whether it will really help or not, plus what are the long term effects on our cars? If any.

Not really a question, more like a "What do you think" statement.

thanks
mike

Is the G designed to handle Ethanol? It will tear up some fuel systems.

You'll be fine, we've had 10% ethanol blends up here in in South Dakota for years and I've used it from time to time.

Ethanol is a classic good news/bad news story:

Good news: It has very high octane rating, about 113 in pure form, so a 10-15% blend will boost typical regular gasoline octane by a few points.

Bad news: It has a lower fuel value, about 30% less than gasoline. If you're interested, here are the numbers:
Gasoline fuel value: 109,000-125,000 BTU/gallon
Ethanol: 80,000 BTU/gallon

Been using the 10% crap for years, never hurt anything. Only time I can ever get away from it is when I go to central Wis. Once a week or so. But I'm sure that will change as well.

Some of my friends have been mixing E85 with 93 for a while, but on boosted apps with some very nice gains might I add.

Some guys are running 26PSI on the street with that mix. Its trial and error tho, but the gains are worth it.

The difference between straight E85 and E85+ 93 octane came out to like 2 more PSI of boost which isnt even worth it.

Modern fuel systems should not have any problems running even straight E85, but you will need bigger injectors because of the fuel value.

Bottom line......Yow will not notice ANY difference on a NA car.........

Gasoline fuel value: 109,000-125,000 BTU/gallon
Ethanol: 80,000 BTU/gallon
Not necessarily. You could be running 1600CC injectors and AEM

Note, the G35 is rated to support up to 10% ethonal, as is probably most cars over the last 20-30 years, but E85 is a different story, being 85% ethonol. More corrosive, and you run the risk of problems running that high of ratio.

Note, there ARE a lot of cars that have FFV support, such as many 3.8liter Taurus's, that will support it.

Make that 3.0 liter. Essentially, the OHV Tauras's. Back when I had a 95, they didn't support it.

I hate ethanol....

You'll notice that the sticker on the pump says... "may contain up to 10%"

This is so they can slowly brainwash you into believeing you're still getting a good product for your money. At first they'll give you a light dosage.... so that you don't know it... then they'll slowly add more and more ethanol.

If and when you get a tank of truly 10% mix... you'll find that your gas mileage will drop buy about 15%, so if you're getting 20 mpg now on good gas... you'll only get 17 mpg on the mixxed.

Also if you do your research on the subject.... you find that Ethanol cost more than gasoline..... and the more poeple use it.... well... I don't think I need to tell you about supply and demand.

Ethanol does EAT rubber parts..... I've been replacing them for years now on my older vehicles.

Ethanol could be made here in the states.... at almost 3 times cheaper than it is.... if they would just use Sugar Beets instead of Corn.

.... If you ask me it's all just a bunch of BS.

case in point... if you take 10% of the fuel away and add clean burning ethanol, then hopefully you have lowered your overall exhaust emmisions for every cilinder firing buy 10%. Great! But when you now add in the fact that you are useing 15% more fuel to drive the same distance... you're actually polluting more. Lets do the math.
100 (gasoline pollution) minus 10% (ethanol added) = 90% (GP) Then if we multiply that buy 15% increased usage.. (90 x 1.15) it = out too 103.5 % (GP)

So you're paying more.... and you're polluting more... great!

It's all about the money.

To add more to it...I did some research on the transportation of Ethanol.
The proucts that make up gasoline, can mostly be transported through pipelines, at a relative low cost. Not Ethanol, Ethanol has to be transported in containter vehicles to wherever it gets processed.

So on top of the extra money to add the ethonal, there's a transport fee tied into that as well.

I still haven't found out if they are using the mix in all octanes or just the more popular ones. Anyone know?

Very true and wouldn't it be nice to keep all that money in the US as opposed to going overseas. We wouldn't have to be PC to those countries in the middle east and south america who threaten our way of life in the US. You would also see the artifical high price of a barrel of crude drop like a rock.

Yes it's all about the money.
