Premium Fuel "recommended" for new G35

The new G35 spec shows Premium Fuel Recommended. This means you can put in regular non-premium gas if you wish. Of course this will not generate the maximum performance, but who cares if you lose few hp from 306hp! You cannot even put in regular gas on other premium cars. Could be some saving in long run.

What level of performance hit are we talkin about by going regular instead of premium?

If you care that much about fuel economy and are too cheap to put in what the manufacturer recommends....then the G isnt the car for you. You may want to consider another vehicle if premium fuel is beyond your means; Civic perhaps?

I used to have a 02 Mitsu Eclipse and it said the same thing. If you put in 87 insted of premium there will not be that much of a difference. The only thing that I noticed between the two was a LITTLE less pull under hard load. Other than that in normal city driving nothing. If you take a trip out to the strip then put to good stuff in. Your computer will adjust as settings

Does it hurt the engine by putting a lower octane gasoline?

The engine will retard timing reducing performance and can eventually make your knock sensors go bad. Your mpg will also be greatly decreased. I finally got my mom to switch from 87 to 91 and she noticed a huge performance gain as well as a huge mpg gain. If you can't afford the gas, you can't afford the car IMO. My mom can afford the gas, she just needed a little coaching and teaching about the car.

Use Premium if you're driving a car like this. When you own a car like the G or nicer, you want to make sure to take top-notch shape of it and maximize its potential. Meaning always change the oil before it really needs it, always use top notch fuel, etc. There are a far cars - but not many - in this class and above that don't need premium to maximize. The CTS with the 3.6 would be one.

Bingo. Using lower octane gas will increase the chances/frequency of preignition, detonation and knock especially under heavy loads or uphill climbs. It may be small knocks and pings over time, but in the long run it will cause major engine headaches....

.....kinda like "the straw that breaks the camel's back" effect.

Besides, if one does the math, with the way prices are right now, saving 15-20 cents a gallon ain't gonna add up to much.

That's no different from the current car. Premium fuel is recommended. If you use regular in a pinch you should top up with premium. Using something lower reduces power and increases the possibility of engine damage.

As others have said if you are after savings it would be a better idea to buy a more fuel efficient car and one where regular is recommended.

Put performance a side and think about consumption: Higher grade fuel burns better than lower grades. It might cost you more but it's more efficient - hence, runs you less on the long run by giving you marginal higher mpg.

I've had my 04' coupe for 3 yrs. now and have never filled her up with anything less than 93.

You guys are taking this too serious. It's not that big a deal. Just cause he asked a question does not mean he can't afford premium. Why throw away money if you don't need to? chill, it won't hurt to try. Geez...
