need help deciding between 6MT and 5AT with paddle shifters

'Scuze me if this has already been kicked around, but aren't the pаddle shіfters on the '07 connected to the stеering column instead of the stеerіng whеel? I didn't notice when I drove one on Friday because I didn't try to change gears while cornering. This is an oft-mentioned point in road tеsts of the increasing number of cаrs (e.g., the Hondа Fit!) with pаddle shiftеrs. As you rotate the whеel for a corner your fingers get out of range of the pаddle shiftеrs if the pаddles are fastened to the steerіng column. During my tеst drivе the salesguy did a very impressive job of quick-shifting the AT up and down with the pаddle shiftеrs - but he was on a straight road.

This is my biggest concern with ordering a AT with paddle shifters. During my test drive, it was quite cumbersome to try to shift through the apex of turns because the paddle shifters do not move with the wheel. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but when you're coming from a manual it's a little bothersome not to be able to shift with ease during this type of driving.
The one thing I did notice is that the paddle shift levers extend all the way down to the bottom of the steering wheel. I didn't try to shift this way, but you might be able to shift while turning by pulling the paddles at the bottom portion of the wheel.
I'm still torn over which tranny to go with...I change my mind with every post!
Does anyone know of a better picture of the MT interior than this one from Automobіle?:

My nearest dealershіp expects to get one (1) MT in their initial allotment due by mid-November, which is one more than some dealershіps are getting, but if somebody pre-buys it, I may never get to check it out ...

That pic looks like the console is different. Maybe I'm not looking close enough, but it seems to me like the console storage area, cup holders, and armrest are missing???? That can't be right...

Instead of left/right cup holders, I think for the 6MT -- because of the e-brake -- you get front/rear cup holders instead.

I think it all depends on where you live. If you're traveling mostly in non crowded area a MT is the way to go. If you live in a major city, than I would go AT. That's just my $0.02

+1
Your type of traffic should dictate whether you need it or not. If you do a lot of country side back roads and highways, you may as well go with a stick. But if you spend a lot of time sitting in stop and go traffic, I'd go with Auto.
I have had my 6MT coupe now for 3 years, but I think it's time to go to Auto. Despite the fact that I usually don't sit in traffic, I'm getting tired. A lot of time I find myself too damn tired for it and just wished I could have an automatic tranny so I can just lay back and cruise. Now, with the introduction of the paddle shifters, I think getting an auto would make more sense. You have the auto tranny for easy driving, and then you have the paddle shifters. Granted, the shifters still won't give me that crazy "stick feeling"
, I'm sure it will be fun enough to play with when needed to.One more factor: My wife. She can't drive manuals. She didn't give me hard time when I bought the coupe and pretty much didn't really care (She has her own car). But now, with kids in the works, there may be times when we will need to switch cars at times and I don't want to keep her stranded.
Maybe one day, when the kids are old enough, and I reach my mid-life crisis, I'll get myself a 2022 SKYLINE GT-R

I'm wondering if the compartment between the switches and the armrest has a roll-back (tambour) lid. The grip at the front suggests that it does ... the current E-Class Benz, of all things, has a compartment in the console like that, with a roll-back lid. http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/1...20103424-E.jpg
I also can't tell from the picture if the handbrake handle has a molded handgrip on the bottom, or is just a plain cylinder. Actually, the picture makes it look a bit ... Freudian. Well, as the good doctor supposedly said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
