need help deciding between 6MT and 5AT with paddle shifters
I'm having a really tough time deciding between the 6 speed manual transmission and the 5 speed automatic with paddle shifting. I've already put my deposit down but have a couple of days to decide on some of my options.
What does everyone prefer? Are there any advantages/disadvantages with one or the other? Is the manual faster/more fuel efficient? Would a manual be better in the snow because I'd have more control?
I test drove the sport with paddle shifting, and I really liked the fact that you could switch back and forth between a "manual" mode with the paddle shifters and standard automatic. It would be great for heavy traffic. The paddle shifting was ULTRA fun too! Nearly all of my cars have been stick shift, but I'm certainly liking the idea of these paddle shifters. As I said in an earlier post, the one downside to the paddle shifters is that the don't move with wheel, so it makes it difficult to shift through turns. Also, what does everyone thing about the auto transmission being only a 5 speed?
I'm kinda confused about this deicision. Any help you guys (and girls) can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I know that I'm going from an '03 coupe that was auto and I'm gonna go for a an '07 sedan with stick.
After seeing everyone with theirs in stick, I knew it was the way to go. It just seems more fun and you have much more control over the car.

Well, since you've had ample MT experience, there isn't much I can tell you about the diffence between AT and MT. What still inclines me to a MT, even after driving the AT '07 yesterday, is the extra degree of control over engine and car speed that a clutch allows. Compression braking with the paddle shifters is pretty much of an all-or-nothing proposition, but a clutch allows you to fine-tune your degree of compression braking.
For somebody who does a lot of commuting in stop-and-go traffic, it's a nobrainer. The AT is the obvious choice. For people who have a more free-flowing commute, and who like to get out on the curvy roads from time to time, the MT should be more attractive.
A MT may save a bit in gas, but the difference is getting smaller and smaller, especially with highway MPG. Anything you save on gas you're likely to give up at trade-in time. Only about 15% of US drivers can even handle a stick, which tends to reduce the resale value of an MT.
Two differences I've heard about between the MT and AT '07 G35, which may or may not influence your choice - the MT won't have air outlets at the rear of the console for the rear passengers, and the MT will have a proper handbrake in the center console instead of the foot-pedal arrangement of the AT.

All my cars have been MT. I live in a major city and now I have to admit that I'm getting tired of the MT because of all the stop and go traffic.
I think it all depends on where you live. If you're traveling mostly in non crowded area a MT is the way to go. If you live in a major city, than I would go AT. That's just my $0.02

My current car is my first MT. I LOOOVE MTs. It's just so much more fun, even in traffic. But today, after testing driving with the shift paddles, I have to admit, even the G auto will be fun. The rev-matching downshifts were smoother than butter.
decisions decisions..
As others have said before me, it mostly depends on your style of driving and where you are planning on going most of the time. If you live in a small town somewhere with not much traffic and many hills and such then stick would be fun I guess, but I just think AT is always a bit more practical for everyday driving. The car is fun either way, I haven't test driven it but there's one in the dealership near me and it looks damn nice. I would go with AT if it was up to me, just seems less troubling, yet maybe not as quick on 0-60 compared to a MT, but nonetheless more practical. Good luck
After living with the 06 G35 auto for a few months, my conclusion is that the only way to have fun is with manual. Regardless of how much power/performance your car has, you can't really drive the car with an auto.

No. So my choice is G35S with manual. Unfortunaly, Infiniti sells only G35X in my country. With paddle shifters

I think it really boils down to personal preference--if possible, drive both models. The only thing is from what I see on this forum, perhaps the 6MT is harder to get? Which would seem to lessen one's ability to wheel/deal...
I like the clutch, but autos are ever more popular here in the States. It makes it easier to work the laptop, makeup, drink coffee, blackberry, and trade stocks on the way to work!
The one thing that does impress me about the 2k7's auto is the rev-matching, that's nice. I have an uncle who went for a Steptronic on a used Z3--when I gave him a look, he replied as if a wise elder that he's been driving stick all his life and is tired of it, especially in NYC traffic. Again, preference. I'm still in the clutch phase of my life, so that would be my choice, but either way, it's a personal decision and you wont go wrong with the new G35! Good luck.

So with the 6MT, would I still get the center console storage area with the power outlet and audio/video inputs? Or do those things and the rear vents only come with the auto?

Rear A/C vents
Driver's Entry Assist
Intelligent Cruise Control
Rear View Monitor
This is for Canadian models, so I am not sure how if it will differ for US models. Hope that helps.
