Interesting autotrans observation

Been using the trans in Sport mode tonight, going down a hill, break moderately hard as I come to a stop sign. The trans automatically downshifts and gives me some compression braking.

Interesting huh?

Wouldn't the tranny have to downshift anyway to keep the car from bucking ??

I always thought an auto tranny (even in manual shift mode) will downshift if speeds reduce (as in you come to a stop from 60mph - it will go down to 2 or 1)
It may or may not auto upshift at redline.

I just never seemed to notice this behavior on my 2003 G.

Good observation. I'll try that tomorrow morning on my way to work.

I also observed that. The car seems to "behave" as if it were a true stick shift, to the facy of downshifting while you apply the break. I dont really recall the same feeling in my 04 G35 Sedan

Rocky, our 03s do not have this feature. Downshift rev matching came out starting with the 05 MY.

Yes, but most do it at a very low RPM.
In other words, it's almost coasting with little to no engine braking.

The downshift Rocky describes happens sooner @ higher RPM.

I think the 03 didnt downshift when your slowed down in MM mode unless you came to dead stop, it would then go to 1st from whatever gear you were in. The 04 and up downshifts from 5>4>3>2>1 as you slow down, even in MM mode. The downshift rev matching is something diff and it was introduced in 05 year cars. None of the 03-06 cars will upshift at red-line. I may be wrong tho.

Not true. If I am in 4th in MM and come to a complete stop, it stays in 4th. It doesn't go 1st unless I do it myself.

So when you start moving again after coming to a stop, you start from 4th ??? Not possible, right ?

This is my guess on what's happening: I think the car will shift down to 1 - it probably doesn't update the "display" since it will automatically shift up to the chosen gear (which is 4th in this case) -- hence the display remains at 4 (telling that you don't have to shift up )

Does that make any sense ? LOL ?

Yeah, maybe that is what happens....and makes sense as well. I guess I was merely thinking of what is on the display and not what's going on behind the scene.
