$23000 good for trade-in?

I want to get a 07 6spd sedan, and i was thinking about trading in my car. The dealer offered me 23000 for a 03 coupe auto loaded with navi, and only 20400 miles. Is that good or not?

It's always best to dispose of a used car by a private sale if you're looking to come out ahead. Typically a dealer will overestimate the trade, but take that off of the discount on the new vehicle. Remember, the dealer will make money on the used and new car sale. And expects a higher margin on the used car.

That sounds about right for trade-in on that car, I just KBB'ed it and it came up $1500 lower for trade-in, in this area. The added bonus of trading a vehicle in is the tax savings and zero headaches, in NY sales tax is higher then most of the country so trading it in will often save you as much the difference from private sale and trade-in. I am getting older and busier and don't really want to deal with selling a car privately these days, dealing with people making promises they don't keep, test drives, waiting for financing to come through, its a headache that may or may not be worth it depending where you are in your life right now.

yeah might get more $$$ but think of how many phone calls you'll have to "entertain" and waiting for the "buyers" to come by to kick the tires etc etc ... for how much more $$$ ...is it worth it ???

I agree with you on this. The best plan where I live is to find a private buyer for your car. Then trade in the car on the new one, and have the dealer sell your trade in to the private buyer. (convenience deal)You save the tax on the trade in value and capture retail price against your new car purchase. I don't know but the tax system may be different in US states.

The downside of this is having to advertise, deal with tire kickers and G owner wannabes. Also some buyers may want a better deal when they find out it is a convenience deal. Timing may also not work for some wanting to make a quick, easy straight trade in deal with the stealership.
