Cheated by nissan :(
my problem
my problem is not with the fact that they gave us choice. yes choice is good...and good for nissan that it sells more cars
but do they have to make it look alot like the car i paid alot more money for...
my car cost around 35k .. so its not fair that a car starting at 19k shud look similar.. that is my complaint..

But, the Solara is no more after this generation, so there are really only two cars it will be competiting against.
Nissan is giving people a choice. A lower priced FWD coupe with manual/CVT, or a higher priced-higher powered RWD coupe with manual/auto, i.e. (G35). Choice is always good.
Anything that makes Nissan more profits will be a very good thing for Infiniti. More profit means more money can be spent on development costs and higher quality products from Infiniti. To become Tier-1, Infiniti needs a worthy flagship car. They don't have that right now.
Nissan/Renault is in the business to make money. People complained about Porsche building the Cayenne, but it gives them funds to build better sports cars.
All I see is a win-win situation. That is my 2 cents...

There is some similiarity to the current generation G Coupe in that side view. From other angles especially the rear it is totally different, looking like a Volvo.
It doesn't bother me in the least.
It is pretty simular looking to the G35 coupe it will be no threat to the 2008 coupe though but I do see the car being mistaken for the 1st gen coupe. Especially when folks start modding the exterior.
If I had a first gen coupe for sale, I'd be worried. So far, the first gen coupe values have held up much stronger than first gen sedans because of the amazing styling of the coupe. I know at least one fairly affluent young woman who bought a coupe for the styling alone, she couldn't care less where the drive wheels were. If I were her (or her parents), I might look at a new Nissan over a used Infiniti.
I think that Nissan is thinking toward the future with this move. They can sell more Altimas by leveraging the look of the coupe into the Nissan brand, and they must KNOW that the 2008 G Coupe will be an incredible advance over the first gen and not affected by the availability of a Nissan that looks like the LAST generation of the coupe. The fact that Nissan is willing to bring this Altima coupe out shows that they are confident that the '08 coupe will be killer and won't be confused with the Altima.
Another cautionary word, though. Remember the BMW 6 Series. BMW created a lean and clean look for a big coupe. Then Ford copied them with the T-Bird and Acura copied them with the Legend coupe. The look of the 6 series was no longer unique, and indeed BMW dropped the 6 series. I'm not naive enough to think that Ford and Acura killed the 6 series, or that anyone with their eyes on a used 6 series would buy a T-Bird, but the special style of BMW's coupe was no longer special.
