The auto is faster.

At least it feels that way. I drove them both back to back again today. The automatic just feels faster to me. I have always preferred and owned a manual tranny.. but now I am leaning towards the auto after ordering a manual... sigh

It could be the torque management programming is restricting more power with the 6spd. Maybe the power delivery is just different and it just feels slower.. gearing... or maybe its just me.. If there is a difference, it's not much

Manual is manual, automatic is automatic. nothing will change the fact that manual is ALWAYS faster unless you have SMG. take the vdc and hit it in the manual youll see. keep the 6mt man i love mine

huh...I didn't know people bought manual trannys because they were faster than their automatic counterparts. I just always assumed that they wanted to drive a car where they have more direct control. And you may be right. The power delivery might be different. It might be the gearing. Nope, it's you. Stop whining and just enjoy your car when you take delivery.

Well guess what.. many people buy manuals because they are faster than autos.. most by a descent amount. There is the more involved experience with the manual which is another reason I get them.
The manual surprised me with lots of vibrations thru the shifter and clutch.. was not expecting that from a car of such refinement. It feels like its connected to a small block chevy. Still deciding..

HAHA here we go again with the on going debate of "is manual faster than auto" the correct answer is..."it depends".

Does the driver of the manual know how to drive?
Is the auto transmission built properly or is it just simply and auto transmission?
Is the car going down the 1/4 mile or a road course?

Lots of things determine which transmission is faster than the auto. When it comes down to it you can build an auto transmission to out shift a manual car anyday, but it takes money and technology. Like i said above you also have to look into is the car being drag raced or road raced. Most road racers prefer the manual because when going through corners they can choose what gear to go to instantly, were with an automatic you have to usually wait for downshifts because you have to tap the paddles or shifter more than once. If we are talking 1/4 mile a built auto transmission will always out run a manual unless it breaks.

My .02:

Technically, speaking, the manual is faster than the auto. However in the real world, the AUTO is. I've owned a couple of manuals and used to even street race them in the old days (don't tell anyone).

In my experience, and all things being equal, the manual is only as good as the driver. In my case, not good enough . The auto will always be more consistent.

Excellent points! But I think the rev matching in the 07 makes road courses pretty quick for us average joes.

I think you guys are misunderstanding why a manual is faster. Many automatics today can shift faster than manuals so that is why it might feel faster, but an automatic will always have a torque converter which sucks up valuable power. Manuals have less drivetrain loss and control torque better and thus, in the hands of a competent driver, are faster.

I would get a manul while you can because automatics and double-clutch gearboxes are getting so good, manuals won't even be around for much longer in higher-end cars. Autos can give you quick shifts and auto-clutch gearboxes give you lightning shifts and lots of control.

Lance Armstrong said it best: "Its not about the bike"

Its all about the driver, not the car.

wrong (atleast with our cars), the auto G packs more low end torque than the manual G, but the manual G packs high end torque the auto doesnt.

With the auto, there is still the torque converter which is viscously coupled to the engine therefore the coupling is not direct. On the other hand with the manual, the clutch is coupled mechanically directly to the engine therefore it is a lot easier to control the engine speed. During tight turn, you want to control the engine speeds to get the rear around and I feel is easier to do with the manual. I am driving an 5AT and sometimes I am afraid to go for the throttle during a turn because I don't know how much of the engine energy is transfered to the rear wheels.
