My girlfriend backed into another car when she drove my old nissan primera automatic. She can't drive a manual. I just bought a 2006 6MT voilla no more girlfriend scratches =)

Also thought it might have better resale value, or be easier to resell as most of the 350GTs that come over to New Zealand from Japan are autos.

BMW agrees with you. Or maybe they don't. Owners cried for a manual option for the M5 so they gave it to them. Guess what, manual drivers are SO skilled that BMW made their traction control systems none disable-able. Reason? BMW knows too many owners abuse the clutch and overrev the engines when left to their own devices.

So the result is, the manual M5 is actually slower than the auto M5.

You're an idiot. I'm willing to bet you don't know how to shift and that your clutch is probably worn down to nothing.

Trust me Dave, you're not the only one.

If I am not mistaken, the M5 has 3 trans flavors; manual, SMG, and Auto. I believe the auto is not as fast as the SMG version. The dealers have told me the SMG shifts way to rough for normal use, so they don't sell to many of them. Hmm ... wrong forum for this discussion .

In terms of this discussion SMG = auto. Because the guy is bashing people that don't shift for themselves. SMG although clutch based, shifts for the driver.

And according this article done in 06'. BMW says they will add a traditional manual. But there's no mention of adding a torque convertor type auto.

The only transmission currently available for the M5 is a new seven-speed SMG automated-clutch manual with six pre-programmed shifting strategies ranging from slow/smooth to tire-chirping hard. BMW promises a traditional six-speed manual with a clutch pedal by fall 2006);

I like that word "twatwaffle". It's French for "*****", right?

This thread provides plenty of entertainment as we skirmish amongst ourselves. Makes me wonder if a BMW enthusiast hasn't been fanning the flames. It's like droping $1 bills on the NY stock exchange floor.

Actually, I would modify that slightly to "twatwaffles who are so insecure they feel the need to bash someone else's choice." Makes one wonder about their need for a "stick"...

lol @ sports car, you give a guy 4000lbs in a car, RWD, and a measly 306hp with four doors and he thinks he has a sports car...lol

With a valve body replacement like some of the AT guys do (I know my friend has it in his G) I would slaughter you manual drivers, and this is coming from a manual guy.

This debate has been around for a long time, and sometimes can turn friends into enemies and turn threads into battle grounds.....

Let's keep it civil, and not forget the OP's original statement that he thought the automatic is a little faster. He's as good as admitted that he could be mistaken.
I'm sure that if CarNutz saw a side by side race of an auto equipped car and a 6 M/T car that he'd realize that, with optimum driving skills, the manual tranny ride would edge the automatic ride. (but not by much!)

So please let's stop throwing stones at each other, arguing, and beating our chests in an attempt to prove who's quicker.......

CarNutz, you've ordered the quicker ride (albeit only slightly), but as you've heard, with only slight modifications to an automatic, it can become much quicker....so don't be too disappointed if the occasion arrises that you get beaten by one (at the strip of course. )

Now everyone cool your jets and don't forget that we're all friends.

Colin.

Yikes, I just got home and see that this thread has funneled downhill. I agree with Colin, this topic has been around since the stoneage, and I have yet to see one of these threads remain civil. I honestly don't know where all the hositility comes from when discussing auto vs. manual, but it always seems to bring out some heated discussions.

Let's keep this civil and absent of name calling from this point forward.

You're off by 500 Pounds

Im sure you know 500 Pounds makes an enormous difference.

Im guessing Infiniti added a "Sport" model for no reason then.

Colin (Msedanman) has an excellent point.
