Tint questions from the newbie

Getting ready for the arrival of my baby. '07 G35 Sport 6MT GE/Graphite with Premium & Nav. Due the week of Feb. 16th.

So I've read in a few threads about several brands of window film that most people recommend. What should I be looking for to weed out the B.S. from the legit qualities when my local shops try to sell me on their products.

Could anyone either link another thread or just list off the brands that they recommend. Also, what type of film is best? Metallic? Ceramic? Dyed? Hybrid?

For the record, I live in central Texas where summer temps top 110 degrees fairly regularly, so I need maximum heat rejection, but I don't want to sacrifice appearance for performance. With the GE body, I think I'd prefer a matte, non-reflective finish in a charcoal-like color.

Thanks for the help!

Mike

I recall reading somewhere that the metallics have some of the best heat rejection.

I've always used Llumar window tint, or atleast asked for it. To date (knock on wood) never had any problems with it.

I've been a fan of 3M products.

And remember, Austin is the global headquarters city for five of 3M's business units.

Best thing to do would be to call some reputable places in your area and check out their selection. Usually places give you choices based on heat rejection and tint %. If i remember correctly TX is legal up to 20%.

When i got tinted they recommended ceramic tint because our antennas are built into the back window, so metallic might interfere with reception.

Always get lifetime guarantee tint, like llumar or 3m because they redo it if it bubbles or discolors (good tint shouldn’t do neither)

Thanks for the responses. I've used Formula One tint in the past and had great results, but I wondered if anyone had any other recommendations.

I'm using 35% metal on mine. NP with cell or radio.

I found in the manual where they warn against metal tints for two reasons...

1. The rear-window FM antenna
2. The Tire Pressure system transmissions may be blocked.

I'll need to tint mine before Summer. I went black/black with my G. I love the look, but it's brutal in the Texas sun.

Interesting .. I went cover to cover when I first got my car and didn't even see that. Well, I can say for certain 1) is not a problem, I listen to FM, XM, checked out AM, and XM traffic and everything worked fine on mine.

2) is probably not a problem since I do not get a TPMS warning. I've heard of other that were not using TPMS in aftermarket wheels who get a warning.

You can always play it safe and go for the more costly ceramic material.

Good luck.

The Sat antenna is the shark-fin on top, so it won't be affected. I found the warnings about metal film by doing a search for "antenna" in the PDF version of the manual.

I got quoted $399 for Ceramic. $179 for a hybrid 3M high performance tint. $230 for carbon. I heard the hybrid and other metallic tints might turn purple. Even though there's a lifetime warranty, they do not replace the tint if it turns purple.

Any recommendation which would be the better choice? I'm leaning toward the $179 3M high perf.

We just got the tint done at the dealer (you can do that hear in Canada). Don't know what kind of tint it was. It was medium tint, and it's legal, but I think thats around 50% tint.

Sprintdammit,

I'm in Austin too and your car gets in a couple of weeks before mine. (They told me late feb or march. Hopefully Austin Infiniti was just padding the dates and I'll get it the same time as yours)

Let me know how your tinting goes and where you had it done.

I've had Madico tint on all of my previous cars with no problems.

According to the guy who did my last tint, TX is legal up to 35% (side windows), and 20% (rear window). I used SolarGard metallic, 33% side and 18% rear window and sunroof. In Houston, I feel your burn...
