about to step into an 07
about to step into an 07
whats up everyone...i currently lease an 06 6mt coupe 12 month lease...my lease is going to be ending soon, and on top of that im having terrible luck with this car so i think im going to get out of a little early. I'm going to get an 07 sport...my problem is im stuck between going with an auto with padle shifters or just getting a 6mt again.
is there that big of a difference between the 2. Keep in mind i do live in brooklyn ny, and probably wont be autocrossing my car anytime soon. But i do love stick.
how do the paddle shifters react by the way, are the responsive or slow like the tiptronic on the last body style.

I took the liberty of moving your post to the 07 Sedan section since you will get more feedback here. I personally love the paddle shifters and find them very quick and responsive.
I test drove the 6MT before ordering my G35S 5AT. I really loved driving the stick, but it is just not practical for daily commutes, where the clutch rules the day.
I've had my G35 for about a week now. In sport shift mode, with the paddles, it actually has most of what I miss from driving a stick.
In sport shift mode, the only time I've seen it shift for me is when I come to a near stop, then it will drop back to first gear.
In any other case, I pick a gear, and it stays on that selection. So if I want that "third-gear-torque-on-tap" kind of experience, it is there. And that is most of what I enjoy about a stick is being able to get the engine right in that sweet spot, and hold it there until I'm ready to go up.
If you want a stick, great... but the 5AT is probably not quite so bad as you think.

yea i feel the same way...the car its pretty luxurious with its features so i feel the auto suits it pretty well.
check out my post below, ive went to the dealer and driven a 6mt last night. right now my coupe is an auto and im gonna get the 6mt for sure. the auto sport shift is fun at times but i dont think you get the full potential of driving a stick. with the stick you have more control over your car and better feel to it. if you get bored easily just like me get the 6mt. i just got my 05 coupe not too long ago and im tired of it already. thats just my opinion. gl on whatever you choose

Having only considered and owned manual trannys, I drove an auto today. I was not impressed... it still is not a manual tranny. With all the hype, I actually thought it might be better.
I'm not saying that anybody thinks it is a 6MT replacement... but as someone who takes the driving experience seriously, the auto is not a replacement at all. Just my opinion. Of course it has other advantages in traffic and commuting, etc... but for sporty driving, I still found it lacking and slow to respond.

Not my experience at all - it seems to auto-shift extrememly fast and keeps the low gear engaged nicely during a coast to stop, ready for acceleration.
And the paddle shifters are almost instantaneous.
Granted, it's not like popping the clutch, but pretty darn sporty, for an old bald guy like me.
I'm in Los Angeles - so auto was more obvious for me.
Oh wait, yeah, I'm lazy too.

Let me play Devil's advocate for a sec, since I own a 6MT. Here are a more few things you don't get with the 6MT:
- 6MT has a much smaller middle glove compartment
- 6MT does not have rear AC vents
- 6MT does not have the feature where the steering wheel and driver seat move as you enter/exit your vehicle
Now, the positives:
- 6MT is cheaper
- 6MT is more fun
- 6MT is more sports car enthusiast-oriented (altho I admit, the auto is not too shabby when I drove it)
- 6MT turns the ladies on (conversely, it turns me on to see a girl drive a stick)
6MT FTW!

Something else to consider... the auto will be easier to re-sell as it appeals to a wider audience, especially in this luxo class of car. I also found the 6MT to be out of character with the rest of the car. It vibrated too much in the stick and clutch.
I didn't mind these traits in my Z06 or mini.. but it felt out of place in the G.
I guess I wanted the whole lux experience... my first time away from a manual... should be interesting.

Then I drove an '07, where the paddles let me hold whatever gear I want; and if I don't have a spare hand, I can flick it into DS (I use the paddles about 99% of the time).
Good luck!
