Greater Programming and Content Choices -- The combined company is
committed to consumer choice, including offering consumers the ability
to pick and choose the channels and content they want on a more a la
carte basis. The combined company will also provide consumers with a
broader selection of content, including a wide range of commercial-free
music channels, exclusive and non-exclusive sports coverage, news,
talk, and entertainment programming. Together, XM and SIRIUS will be
able to improve on products such as real-time traffic and rear-seat
video and introduce new ones such as advanced data services including
enhanced traffic, weather and infotainment offerings.

The way I read the statement sounds like it's going to be a single service.

Everywhere I've ever lived had a monopoly on cable. rarely do you have comcast, adelphia and time warner all offering service in the same town. How's that not anti-trust and Sat Radio would be? double standard for entertainment delivery.
In addition, neither XM nor Sirius are actually profitable. They're losing money. That may actually be a plus when getting past governmental issues.

Seems to me like satellite radio is a small reason not to buy a particular car...

This is sort of a dead issue ATM. with XM & Sirius merging possible this month... just sit tight and see how this plays out... I think they vote on the 13 of Nov.

My understanding is that with an XM radio they will turn on and you will start receiving the Sirius channels in addition to the XM channels. you may be able to keep your factory setup and receive the better (left Jab, right jab) Sirius programming.

I read that both satellite radio services will continue to operate separately for the next 15 years and that the addition of an a la cart package which combines the two will require new hardware.

I haven't heard about the operating seperatly, that may be a possible decision. but the hardware I doubt... they are doing it today a la care service with Sirius and XM both. i.e. playboy channel on Sirius, and wasn't Oppie & Anthony a la carte on XM?
