My license plate frame and tinted cover...
I remember a thread a while back asking for suggestions on license plate frames and I finally took a picture of mine now that the permanent plate is in. I am in the process of hopefully getting the license plate from my old car transfered to the G, but it's a little complicated.
Anyway, it's a solid black metal 2 screw license plate frame, with black screw caps and a lightly tinted cover over the plate.

And here is the license plate I want back !!!!

Pictures of my car to this point are ---> http://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/~mi167268/G35S/features.html, but I'll be taking more (better) pictures after I get my tint done.

I have the paperwork sitting in my e-mail inbox... it just sucks having to pay registration twice, but I love my old plate
Oh and I'm getting tint on Monday at 10AM !!!! I decided on 15% matte black all around and nothing on the windshield.

I was given a warning and told the cop many vanity plates have a tendency to fade so I wanted a "UV Protection" on the plate. That's why I got a light one so it would still be easy to see. He let me go with a warning

That's the one and only time I've had an issue.
My window tint is also going to be past legal limit, so we'll see.
I was honest about the fact that I went with a very light tinted cover and actually I do notice vanity plates have a tendency to fade, but that's not why I have it
It is illegal to have any license plate frame, or cover here in the state of NJ. It doesn't matter if it's clear, tinted, or thin. Tint is always an issue, especially with a black car. Something about a black car and tint raises red flags with the authorities. Once again, it all depends on your local police.
Here is my frame, I believe it is the same as yours.

You have the "bubble" I think. It could just be the reflection. Does your cover bow out in the middle. Those make it a little harder to see the plate. Again it could just be the reflection. Mine is the completely flat kind. Either way you're exactly right. All covers are illegal clear or tinted, but the tinted ones are just easier to spot. Your car looks great by the way!
The cops seem pretty relaxed here in South Florida. I swear every other car on the road has limo tint (5%). I had 20% on my A4 which was slightly past the legal limit and never had an issue. I'm gonna go with 15% on the G which should work for me. I don't want to be so dark I can't see out though

Mine is the one that is slightly bubbled in the middle. I would be interested in getting the flat one, which brand do you have? I would like to get a tinted cover with a very very thin metal black frame.
Depending on the number of cars in your area, and the frequency at which the cops see cars on a daily basis with tint will determine how often you get pulled over. For example, if I am here in my town, I will be more likely to get pulled over than if I crossed the bridge into NY. Basically it's wrong place, at the wrong time kind of thing. But come on now, who doesn't tint a black car????
I would have gotten < 15% if I didn't have such poor vision at night.

I have no idea who makes it and I had to trim it with a dremel just to get it to fit under the frame, which was kind of annoying. I went to a local car specialty store... the type of store that sells the high end waxes and car accessories. I am friendly with one of the guys who works there so he usually hooks me up. They had a stack of tinted covers and I looked through them and they were all really dark, but then I found one that kinda stood out as being lighter so I just took it. Last time I went they were sold out so I guess everyone likes a tinted cover
I don't have the best eyes, but I saw easily with 20% and I have friends with 15% and it's barely darker so that should be fine. I have a friend with limo tint on an SUV and you simply can't see out at night.
Oh and I've had my car for 1 month and haven't tinted it yet, so I'm itching to get the tint on. I couldn't find a good shop where I go to college and I didn't want to bring it to a bad place, so I waited until Spring Break and now that I'm home I know where there is a good shop.

On your license plate it's illegal to have a tinted cover, it's also illegal to have a clear cover. I'm fairly certain this is the same in any and every state.
As for window tint there always seems to be much debate on what people think is actually legal and illegal. As per Llumar's web page linking to the 50 state's window tint laws....
In Florida the limits are:
Front sides = 28%
Back sides = 15%
Rear window = 15%
Windshield = AS1 (represents how far down a tint strip can go)
So 20% all around is only illegal on the front sides obviously.
Now I'm going with 15% all around and again it's only illegal on the front sides. If I get pulled over I'd likely roll my front sides down
I guess because even the clear ones can end up reflecting sunlight making it harder to read your license plate and/or check the registration, but other then that I can't begin to guess why.
I think they are concerned about the laser speed guns - they usually point at the plates (best reflective surface) and it obscures the read. There are also some covers that blur the plate to signal photo-ticket equipment...
