Jack Point question
Jack Point question
I just changed my oil for my car ('07 G35x), and I used a hydralic jack to lift my car at the jack point. When I was jacking it up, the jack point metal bent towards one side. I was wondering that that is normal?
I hope i did not damage my car.
any responses would be thankful. Thanks.

It seemed to me that the jack point was going to bend regardless due to the heaviness of the car. I mean the manual says to put the jack on the jack point. Am I miss reading it?

If the metal line, or the thing frame with the teeth on it bends a little bit? Does it affect the frame of the vehicle? I made sure that the aftermarket jack did not touch the body of the car, and it seems that the jack point is the vicinity of where to jack your car. Am I right on that? Will the frame be damaged due to the aftermarket jack?
Bending the frame with a jack if it's used in the right spot is pretty difficult.
These unibody frames are quite rigid - and with the extra welds on the 07, I'd be very surprised if you caused any damage....

I was also concerned about bending the metal at the factory jack points. So I took a hockey puck and made a 1/8" wide by 5/16" deep groove across its diameter. When I jack the car I place the puck on the jack pad so that the metal lip of the jack point drops into the groove. So far, no bending problems.

will the hockey puck idea work? Actually I was driving the car today, and I don't know if i'm paranoid or not but it seemed like the car was a bit off center. as in it would drift to one side oh so slightly, maybe it is a tilted road, but maybe i'm paranoid. Don't know but I hope there is no damage done.
How would one fix a problem if I did end up bending the frame?

Hey Ed,
Take a picture of the area if you can, I seriously doubt you damaged anything. I've managed to bend frames, but that was with hitting a guardrail @ 30MPH!
Instead of a hockey puck, I've been using this:

It's more expensive, but it is well made and stable.

You are paranoid. IF the car frame would bend just because you jack your car than if you have a flat next time dont jack your car even with a stock jack bcos it would bend the body.. To bend the frame of a car you need to, drive 40 mph and hit a wall.
The hockey puck idea works great. That is what I use to jack up my car.
Just one thing to clear up - Did you just bend the lip at the jackpoint? If so, your car will be fine, it will just have a small scar. As someone else suggested, take a pic and post it up.

The end of the stock jack has a groove that goes around the guide on the jack point. You just bent the guide for the emergency jack. You should have another jack point in the general area of the emergency jack point. Use that next time with your garage jack.
