Sport w/ 17" wheels?

Sorry if this was covered elsewhere and I missed seeing it in my search.

As I had a 1st Gen G and live in an area where there is decent amount of snowfall, I have a set of the OEM 17" 5 spoke wheels from the sport package with snow tires on them. They are now in storage in the basement.

With my new G being a sport with bigger brakes, is there enough clearance to use my old snow wheel and tire package on those 17s with the new car? I am guessing they will not fit but that is just from eyeballing.

If not, guessing there will be a soon to be added item in the marketplace.

Thanks in advance.

It's hard to say but I would guess the first gen 17" G35 Sport rims would fit. I know Garnet Canuck was even running some 17" steelies with snows from a friends Maxima on his 07 Sport for part of the winter.

I was considering the 07 G35 Sport and want to swap for the 17s from the Journey. I had a thread on this subject before and the concensus was that it can be done, even with the larger brakes on the sport.

Yep, that's correct. I was running 17" steel wheels for a little while earlier this winter.

You shouldn't have any issues with your 17" OEM wheels.

Thank you everyone.

They will remain in the basement until they are needed come wintertime.

I have an 07 G35 6MT. I really wanted a Journey with a 6MT but not an option. The dealer (Grubbs Inifinti in Euless, TX) swapped my 18" wheels for a set of 17" Journey wheels. Although the caliper clearence is tight, I've had no problems.

Two caveats

1. On the sport models there is a ~3/4" spacer held on to the hub of the front disks by a 12 mm bolt. You will probably have to remove the bolt/spacer before the 17" wheel will fit on the front.

The sole purpose of the spacer is to prevent installing the 8 1/2" rear wheels on the front, so removing it does no harm. Just make sure that you get the correct wheels on the back and front when you swap back to the summer wheels/tires .

2. To maintain the same rolling radius as the stock 18" tires, the correct size snow is a 225/55-17, although a 215/55-17 works fine also. As long as all four snows are the same size, it won't upset the VDC, but if they are undersize it will make the speedo/odo read high.

Don't forget that the TPMS must be recalibrated as well. You should be able to get the dealer to do this.

If the clearence is that tight, is there ever a chance of a problem with heavy rain, road debris, or any scenario that could possible get the caliper to touch the inner rim?

bocatrip,
I haven't had any problems with road debris or heavy rain. The front wheels are balanced with a combination of wheel weights - traditional weight on the inside of the wheel and adhesive weights on the wheel surface that is closest to the brake caliper. My concern has been air turbulence that might cause excessive noise. The dealer assures me that this is not a problem but I'm considering having the caliper polished to provide additional clearance.

By the way, I just had some sound deadening work done - Hushmat on the front kickplates, on the floor and in the truck. Major improvement in excess road noise. I'm planning on adding some additional sound deadening material in the front wheel wells.

Do you mean air turbulence or tire noise? Do you really think this is due to the close proximaty of the calipers or just road/tire noise. I've had enough history with tire noise on my coupe and if there is even the slightest chance this will reoccur with the Sport/Journey wheel swap, I'll stick with the Journey and live with smaller brakes. I don't want issues with a new car. I'll have to sit on the fence for this one until I get enough feedback with the swap.
