It's VDC, and yes - if it's on and detects wheelspin, it'll start slowing down that wheel. This does not lead to an optimal start...

Sorta OT: According to the FSM, when the auto tranny is in M, the torque converter locks up in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears. When in D, the torque coverter locks only in 5th, and "slip-locks" in 3rd and 4th. I've always wondered what effect the torque converter has on putting power to the ground: Would you be putting more power to the ground when the torque converter is 1) locked up, 2) slip locked, or 3) unlocked? Or does it make no difference? Anyway, from personal online research, it seems that an unlocked torque converter is better for acceleration (better torque multiplication and thus putting more power to the ground?) and is worse for fuel efficiency. I do know that when you are accelerating in any given gear at any given speed, your rpms will be higher when the torque converter is unlocked.
With that being said and to answer your question, I would think 1st gear would be the same, whether the tranny is in M, DS, or D. The torque converter is unlocked in 1st gear regardless of what mode the tranny is in, and all modes allow to you rev up to redline.
