Trailer Hitch?

Has anyone installed a trailer hitch on the new G yet? I have a hitch mounted bike rack on the WRX and it would be really convenient to put it on the G occasionally.

I just got this e-mail from the rep. from etrailer. Have not heard from Curt the MFG. yet. So it will probably fit all the models because I think all the rear bumpers are all the same? They only tested it on the g35x.

I just pushed latest information this afternoon which includes a G35 Sedan hitch from Curt. They built this hitch on a G35x but were unable to look at any other submodels to determine if the new hitch will fit… So it’s only shown on the G35x right now… Perhaps you are more familiar than they are about any differences which might exist. It appears to me from the data I can find that there probably are not any differences but ??

If yours is not a G35x I would suggest downloading the install sheet off our site and parking your vehicle next to a G35x and then observe where the hitch attaches and see if you can visually see any thing which might interfere. Obvious things to look for are fascia differences, exhaust differences and structural attachment point differences. If they appear the same to you we may be able to arrange a deal with the manufacturer to waive any restock and return shipping fees if it doesn’t fit. In exchange for positive feedback and detailed information of your exact vehicle..

Hope this helps..

Just me 2 cent, but I'd only put a hitch on the G if I was getting a brush guard for the grill.

If your planning on towing with your G i think you have the wrong car and your on the wrong forum. Try the dodge minivan forums or possibly the Jeep forums. Or get a QX but towing on the G just makes it look like you cant afford a car that is actually made to tow, and you wouldnt want to look cheap now would you?

Same here, but not if it's terribly ugly (which it probably will be ).

There's nothing wrong with using a hitch mounted bike carrier on a G35. It looks a LOT better than having a permanent roof rack (and it's a lot less noisy). When not in use, you don't even notice that it's there. And it sure beats driving a jeep, or whatever that knucklehead suggested.

look cheep? last time i checked i could trade in my G and get 2 minivans.
so excuse me if i don't have full time AWD and 1+ feet of ground clearance because driving to work requires it when i hit a pot hole or some thing.
your just pissed because you still own a minivan.
the G is a great car to tow with. jet skis, boats, snowmobile trailers. or even a utility trailer.
a car is a tool, you buy it to use it. and if you buy it to look at it, have fun with that. Ill be enjoying my car while u stare at yours pulling ur pud and watching the value go down day by day.

clown.

+3 Its funny other how people need to tell you what to do with you car ? If you dont like it dont put one on your car. My trailer puts the same or less load on my car then 3 fat friends going to a football game.

post #35 will give you a better idea of the minimal cutting you have to do on the bumper.

I have the curt hitch installed. I was concerned with the mounting though so I added 2 through bolts that are about 1.5 inches inside of the top two mounting bolts. the aluminum bumper beam is a hollow rectangular extrusion, the factory has 8mm rivnuts mounted to the rear side of the hollow section. I used 2, 3/8 grade 8 cadmium bolts with flat washers and nyloc nuts. I havn't towed with it yet, i have been using it for my mtn bikes. one is lighter 26 lbs the other is 40 lbs. the rack puts the weight almost 3 feet out so it is nearly 200 ft/lbs of torque at rest. much higher when pounding through mtn highways at speed!!

I drilled the bumper beam oversize so I could slip a 1/2 stainless steel tube through the beam that is just slightly shorter than the thickness of the beam (about 1/8"). this prevents the 3/8 bolts from crushing the bumper beam.

getting the washers and nylocs on the back of the bolts is a nightmare though it is do-able. I wear size 10 gloves my hands just fit barely.

*** beware the torque specs on the factory bolts, it is only ? 26 ft lbs or something, i don't remember specifically, but the rivnuts are all you have to mount to!!!

update, after a few road trips the hitch is still mounted solid. I am glad I put the extra bolts on as well. I didn't notice my bikes out back even while slaloming my way to Whistler on a mtn hwy.
