slightly impressed with my gas mileage

OK my car says "RANGE 37 MILES" and I've driven 344 on this tank so far. My city/highway driving has been pretty even. This is my second tank of gas (I have around 680 miles on the car). I always reset the trip computer after I'm done filling up. My speedometer is 100% accurate (tested it with GPS).

I've been babying the car until I hit 1200 miles and change the oil. It's a 6 speed, and I'm familiar with the engine/tranny since I had an 05 6MT coupe before this. In other words, I'm a seasoned pro at driving the G35's manual gearbox.

From what I've read I'm doing pretty darn well in terms of gas efficiency. According to Infiniti's listed stats, the 6MT's only post slightly greater gains in terms of gas mileage. Perhaps it's better than they are leading on, or perhaps the new engines are THAT much more efficient. On my coupe I'd have to fill up at 330 miles if I was driving like a wuss. That car had the same size tank and was lighter (i think).

Just thought I'd share.

Good stuff. I've definitely noticed an increase in fuel economy now that I've got more miles on it (5600 KMs).

6mt
Speaking of 6MTs. I am so close to getting a new 07 sedan. I also have an 05coupe 6MT. I consider being able to drive that thing smoothly an art, and I just can't bring myself to knowingly get another MT car from Infiniti with the same trans. It is great when your beating on it, but it sucks for day to day driving.

My only complaint really.

I find the key to driving the 6MT smoothly is to accelerate and shift slowly. The clutch engagement point and the gas pedal are great for quick shifts, but it does take a deliberate slowness to drive smooth.

Is my math wrong? Assuming you'll need ~20 gallons at fill up you're only getting ~18 mpg?

I don't think the trip computer counts down to exactly zero. I remember having the FX loaner a while back. I left Scottsdale and drove to Phoenix (about a 30 mile drive the way I went) with the range indicator displaying "----". I think when it tells you zero you still have one or two gallons left in your tank. The tank does hold 20 gallons, however, I've never been able to put more than 19 gallons in it, and that only happened once.

If i truly drove it until I was out of gas I could have probably gotten at least 400 miles from the tank.

I wish the "short" throws were even shorter, but you're right, your footwork still has be to quick and swift. But there's no way we can shift like racers do. In order to get a smooth shift, I find myself having to hold the clutch pedal half way just for a split second as I increase throttle. Once the gear is in place, then I let off my left foot all the way. So, step -> let up -> pause -> let up.

Either I'm having too much fun (no lead foot here, only sometimes), or it's just the nature of the VQ engine, but my best MPG was just a over 20mpg.

the trip computer doesnt count the reserve... once ive driven 40 miles after it said "0 miles" and i knew i could still go a little more too

I always calculate the mpg by the "old" method and then check it against the computer... its pretty accurate

Nice to hear a comparison...
I'm pretty lazy and prefer others to verify these things. THANKS!!
Seriously, I've done the math and it's pretty close. +/- 2%

I've been keeping a record of my fuel economy recently to decide whether the snow tires and winter fuel cause a significant reduction in mileage. I've also found that the computer is very close to my calculations, just slightly less accurate due to the fact that it is rounded to 1 significant digit as opposed to 4.

I took delivery on Saturday, and on the way home went ~80mph on the Interstate and was getting (an indicated) ~21-22mpg. Thus far around town, I seem to be getting around 19mpg. Not bad for a 306hp 3500 lb. car with <500 miles on the odo.

My fuel indicator is showing that Im only getting about 10mpg on the highway at about 80mph. On the street its either the same or lower. I have 1/4 tank left and ive driven 162miles so far. Is it just me, or is something seriously wrong with my gas consumption. I use premium 93 octane and I have an 07 G35x which I picked up 2 days ago brand new.

Can our G handle 93 octane? Stick to 91 and see what results you get.

I use exxon/mobil and they only have 87, 89 or 93.

Can the 93 seriously be hurting my gas mileage?

On a side note, I searched the forums and came up with a few threads that I read and it said to go light on the pedal. So tonight I went out and went reallllly light on it and I let it accelerate on its own and my gas meter showed much better mileage. I think I may be able to get a handle on this situation yet...LOL. Now I just have to figure out how to go slow on the parkways.
