A Hard cover for that reason actually makes sense. I'm thinking there has to be something already on the market for something else that would work. That sounds like a good thing to do some searches for.

Did the fob have to be re-registered with the car? Or did it just pick up with settings as before?

When you change the battery, the settings aren't lost. No need to reprogram.
