Good highway gas mileage!

My best full tank average is 22.7, with a mixtue of city/highway commuting.
This was accomplished by keeping the car in "D" mode and behaving.
Playing with "M" mode drops this down to 18.x.
Best full highway average for me was 27.7.... I was amazed!
If I need good (satisfactory for a car of this nature) economy, I can get it by
keeping it in drive and behaving.... but who likes that???
I play hard and I'm still averaging 18.x.... way better than I expected and I'm super happy with that.

Surprisingly good hwy gas mileage in my brand new G35Sport 6MT. On a 160 mile trip down and back up the NJ Tpke, I got nearly 27 MPG. Mind you, I am still in "break-in" mode with now 680 miles on the car. So, I was trying to see how much mileage I could get out of the G staying under the recommended 4K rpm threshold. So I was running below 3K rpms in 6th gear at times but varying between 4th, 5th and 6th gears and varying between 65-90 MPH.
When I wanted to get some pop and shifted and quickly accelerated, I noticed the mileage drop to 13-14 MPG on that bouncing orange graph when you push INFO and the fuel economy tab.
In city driving I am averaging about 15.
Man, this car is an absolute blast to drive, even during break in.

I know it's extremely hard to accurately measure, actually it's impossible unless your in a controlled environment, but has anyone noticed any correlation between mpg and brands of gasoline? I only have 1600 miles on my new G. I've been using Shell since day one and have had no better than 18.24mpg. Generally they have been in the high 17's. The last 2 tanks I switched to Sunoco and have been in the high 19's. While not being much, that's almost 40 miles per tank full which equates to over 2 gallons of gas, which equates to a $6+ per tank savings.

My experience with my recently departed Passat VR6 here in the north east--I fill up in New Jersey--is the reverse of what Virus describes. And location makes a difference in gasoline mixes. In NJ the 94 octane Sunoco always lagged behind my 93 octane Shell fill-ups. Up to the BP merger, I got the best mileage from Amoco, not so much since the merger.
Since I got the G35S two weeks ago I've had two "V Power" 93 octane Shell fill-ups with 690 miles on the car. The first yielded about 14.8 MPG. My most recent fill up today yielded 17.8 MPG with a 50/50 mix of city/hwy driving. Compared to what I've read on the G35 forums, this seems like fairly good mileage for the break in stage.
Since you are just past the break in stage, the increasing MPGs may be the result of the mileage improving as you add miles to the car, not necessarily the gasoline brand.
I'll try Sunoco next fill-up and see if the G reacts differently than my Passat did. Could happen.

I use to always use Amoco religiously. There was a guy on maxima.org that use to be a chemist for BP and said that they actually purchased Techron for their detergent, but after the merger went completely through they started mixing their own stuff. Shell would always get me the best mileage in my maxima, but there were no Sunoco stations around a few years back. The Shell stations near my house were just recently changed to Shell. They used to be mom and pop gas stations and I would frequently see that they failed weights and measures tests.
