no tricks, i test drove the 6mt and 5at. having always owned a manual, and coming from my boosted specv 6spd, the 6mt was very dissapointing. Absolutely no feel and an inability to get smooth takeups and parking lot speed driving.

drove the 5at with paddles and it shifted just as good as I could with the 6mt, and I was grabbing the gears with everything I had.... my 14.0@101.9 against a 6mt 07 g35s' 14.4@98 proved what I felt from experiencing both vehicles.

I wonder how many 5AT owner use the paddle shifters (or console shifting) on a daily basis. I would start a poll but not sure how to.

I only use my paddles - very rare that it's in auto mode. I like the G to be in the gear that I choose

Oh, and to post a poll, post a new thread, and at the bottom of the page you'll see "Post a poll with this thread"

and at first I wasn't feelin it coming from a manual, but after a while of playing with it, I've gotten pretty good with it, honestly feel that if I were to take it to a track and compare with MT the difference would be very small. You just have to learn to adjust, and yes shift a bit sooner at certain times.
Just as if your going to pass on the freeway, downshift a split second sooner that with a manual and you dont miss a beat, or same with down shifting before a nice curve. One cool thing I had no idea the tranny couldd do is to downshift when in the normal drive setting. . .I thought this was only possible under manual mode. . .. but maybe it was just me that didnt realize this soon enough
That I can understand +1

Pretty much the same here for me.

Glad to see other have noted this. Mine does not have paddles, I have a normal auto stick version, but while trying to get used to auto stick driving I've noted about one half of a second in delay shifting up. If you hit it at 6500it's a bit too late, you need to anticipate when the car will actually shift.

With the auto has anyone experimented to see if they can do quicker 1/4 mile times with the auto just in Drive as opposed to using the stick. I assume infiniti designed for optimal automatic shifting. Will using the stick or paddles in a straight line slow it down??

I find 5AT on our car really usable. It's fast, accurate, and reliable. I find it shifts-UP a lot quicker while your foot is on the gas padal and shifts-DOWN quicker while you break your car. Just my 2cent.

I wish I had the paddles, but alas, no Sport option on the 07x.

gord's grounding gear does help the AT shift delay - check out the reviews section.

This has not been my experience with my '07.

I am usually in the manual mode when driving on the freeway. One of the things that I like is the tranny does not down shift for you from 5 to 4 or from 4 to 3 if you are in manual mode. So basically you can floor the car in 5th and it does not down shift for you. Now if you want to down shift you have to shift the paddle manually. It works just like the stick shift car. Go out and try it, but you have to make sure you see the gear number, not the "SD", on the screen.

One thing, I am glade that I got the S model. With the Journey the shifter is so hard to use because my elbow hits the seat every time I shift. I experienced it with the loaner.

That's the right answer.. but Infiniti did a lousy job matching up the 6-speed in this car.. between the clutch issues and vibrations... the auto seems a better choice... until you push it.

Did you get the 10 wire kit and install the wire from the tranny back up to the cluster?

That one made the most significant change as I recall - I left it off initially because I had to lift the car to get to it. But it was worth it.

Maybe the grounding is now improved and there is nothing more to be gained from grounding kits...

Just want to clarify that this eliminated the "electronic delay", which I define as the time from when you press the shifter to the gear display changing on the console. I had a pretty significant delay right there. That went to 0. There is still a mechanical delay (actual shift) that occurs after the display changes.

Yes sir I did - except that Gord's kit for the '07 just has the wire connecting to the tranny fill tube, which presumably he has checked to be functional. Neither my shift delay nor shift execution times changed an iota - so maybe the '07s do have better grounding.

The auto works well and matches up better with the car under most conditions.. but as with most autos.. it lacks the direct feel and control. It also hangs onto shifts and is slow to respond under certain conditions... but for everyday use... its the better choice for this car... IMO.
I looked at the 6MT as well and I also disliked the MT. It didn't feel refined and had lots of vibration. If I bought a Sport, I would have gotten it with the 5AT, which would have made it my first AT in a car that offered an MT (since the X isn't offered with an MT I don't consider it the same).
