In-Dash Component Video: What Devices Work?

Hi Guys, I've been trying to run video through the in-dash monitor but I can't seem to get anything to work. I'm using the right cable via the center console, I've got the car in park with the parking brake on, so I think it's the sources I'm trying to use. I tested it using my Mac PowerBook and iPhone and neither seem to work. All I get on the dash screen is a black screen with a stretched digital clock in the upper right corner.

So, what devices actually work to run video or DVD's through the in-dash screen? Do video iPod's work? Do those cheap portable DVD players sans screens work? Do laptops work? (do I just need to adjust the setting?)

Please let me know...thanks!

anything and everything works through the A/V inputs. I've used my Archos 504 and my iPod Video.

Excellent...I'm happy to hear that these devices DO work, but HOW do they work? Especially the laptop...I'm using a PowerBook to test the in-dash video and all I'm getting is a black screen.

BTW, I am able to succesfully hear the sound through the car speakers using my iPhone and laptop....but I can't see video. Argh.

I don't have the NAV package and my video is fine. Car in park, emergency branke on and hit the aux button. Turn on your A/V device of your preference and it shows up on the screen. I did have problems with my first set of cables I used. I ended up purchasing a ZipLinQ retractractable cable which is fantastic to put into the armrest compartment.

They work as everyone else has mentioned. Your problem is that you need to figure out how to get your laptop and iPod to enable it's video output. You don't need to test this in your car, you can just plug them into your tv using your tv's composite input also. I'm not familiar with how your powerbook works, but on most pc's there's an option in the display settings to output to tv (ie output to the composite output). There should be an option in the iPod also as others have mentioned.

Well with any computer, if you are trying to output video "notice I didn't say duplicate the screen" but video, it will show black, because the laptop is the dominate player and video can only run through one at a time. Go into the video card options and make the car the primary monitor.

japhule: I just tried going to Display in my Settings and there is no option to switch to TV. Dangit. Also, I don't have an iPod, I have an iPhone...maybe it doesn't have a video out?

G35Five_O: I'm using the Apple iPod brand AV cable, red/white/yellow to 3.5mm jack.
