The 512 file limit on CompactFlash
The 512 file limit on CompactFlash
I have read a lot of the threads here about the limit of 512 files on the CompactFlash. Because of this, I ordered a 2GB CF card. However, after reading the voice command cheat sheet, I'm beginning to wonder if we can actually put 131,072 (256*512) files on a CF card.
Take a look at the CF section on the cheat sheet:
http://www.zetapixel.com/g/g35_07_vr.pdf
It lists 512 tracks, but it also lists 255 folders. It seems to imply that each folder (maybe even including the root folder) can have a maximum of 512 files each.
Has anyone tried this?

Well but there might be a limitation on the number of files independent of the number of folders...
Or there could be that when you add a folder, it takes a spot in the namespace reserved for files... so if you have 12 folders you can only fit 500 files.
I think someone needs to grab their CF card and test this out... put 500 dummy folders in it and see if they can add 10, 20, 50 files to each or something like that.

I bought a 4gb CF card yesterday but since I read about the 512 file limitation, I put 495 songs on it contained in maybe 50 album folders. Used about 3.1 gigs of space on the card. I'll try loading up the card and see what happens. (BTW, Circuit City is running a special & I got the card for $60. They're usually ~$90.00).
I don't know why Infiniti decided to use CF instead of the more common & much cheaper SD media (I have a handfull of these cards). Only a few higher end digital cameras use CF these days. I guess the upside is that CF is larger and harder to lose and probably more durable.

CF Card
Well it is true that the CF card only allows 512 files, and if you do fill it up with the limit on your card, say 4 gigs, only the 1st 512 show up. THey also show up in the order that you put them on the card, not alphabetical, or # order. I Use a 4 gig SD card that i got onsale a few months back from buy.com and use a SD to CF converter. Its a great idea for people who have lots of SD cards and works awesome, It is cheap, like 12-15 buks, and is on ebay. Heres the link
