Is it true that you can mess up the fob if...

you have it too close to the door handle when you push the button to open it?

There is no reason to believe this will damage the key in any way.

There is nothing to worry about. It won't mess it up. There are several spots where the car have hard time to recognize the fob. That is probably one. I never tried it. My biggest problem usually to find the fob if I need it.
