Problems at altitude?

Anyone ever had this problem?

I was driving up in the mountains last week on I-70 going up to Vail Pass (~10,000+ feet) and the car just slowed down on me. It wouldn't go past 60 MPH, RPMs were about 3000, even with the pedal to the floor. I let up on the gas and tried to work my way back up, but no luck, still topped out at 60. A couple of minutes later, the car returned to normal, no problems.

It just felt weird, given this was at interstate grade (i.e., not more than 6-7%). Any thoughts, suggestions, driving tips?

Thanks,

H.

I've made that same drive with no problems. Not sure what to make of it.

have you checked your air filter? At that altitude there's less oxygen. Maybe one of the sensors picked up on that and reduced the power.

when the ecu detects out of range voltage it will through it into limp mode. it wont go past a certain rpm. revs are slow and power is drastically down(goes to a set rich map with the throttle plate only allowed to open 20% or so. could of seen the different readings from the altitude and did that???? just a guess. but if there was no check engine light, it would not be the limp mode.

I thought "limp mode" will make it much slower - not 60 mph IIRC.
Then again, my memory is not what it used to be - so you could be correct

Thanks, guys. It definitely felt like "limp mode" even without a check engine light and at about 60 mph, in that the speed and rpm's definitely topped out/ felt regulated...

I will check the air filter, but wouldn't think that's a problem at about 2K miles?

You should bring it to the dealership to scan for codes. There may be codes that does not show up under "Check Engine Light" but are saved in the ECM. For a new car, this should never be. If it logs mis-firings, etc there may be a chance that you have bad coils/wires/MAF/O2 sensors...
