WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Xanavi system in the Infiniti G35 ranks highest in new-vehicle owner satisfaction with factory-installed navigation systems, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study(SM) released today.
Now in its ninth year, the study identifies six factors that contribute to overall customer satisfaction. In order of importance, they are: ease of use, routing, system appearance, speed of system, voice directions and navigation display screen.
For the first time since the study's inception, Xanavi ranks highest among factory-installed navigation systems, performing particularly well in the ease of use and speed of system factors. The Denso system supplied in the Lexus IS 250/350 and the Alpine system supplied to the Acura TL, respectively, follow Xanavi in the ranking.
The study finds that nearly 18 percent of navigation system owners report having real-time traffic capabilities, and 47 percent report having voice recognition. Consumers whose navigation system is equipped with these features report particularly higher satisfaction when compared with owners of navigation systems without real-time traffic and voice recognition capabilities. Additionally, consumers with off-board capabilities, which enables owners to provide a destination to a live operator and receive automated turn-by-turn directions, also have particularly higher overall satisfaction compared with those without the feature. In 2007, nearly one-half of owners report that their vehicle is also equipped with an Off-board navigation system.
"Although satisfaction is higher among owners of navigation systems where turn-by-turn assistance is also offered in the vehicle, these consumers still greatly value traditional full-screen capability," said Mike Marshall, director of automotive emerging technologies at J.D. Power and Associates. "When asked if they would give up the full-screen option and only use turn-by-turn assistance, more than four out of every five off-board system owners said they would not consider foregoing the full-screen option."
While technologies such as off-board, real-time traffic and voice recognition can enhance the overall navigation system experience, owner satisfaction with these specific technologies is relatively low.
"In general, owners say that these new technologies tend to be problematic and somewhat difficult to use," said Marshall. "Despite this, owners still enjoy having more technologies within their system, as they feel these features add value. One way to ease the difficulty owners may experience in using these features is to enhance buyer education."

Sweet, great find man.
In the 11 months that I've owned my 07 I have been extremely satisfied with the Navi. It has the best graphics I've seen.

I'm curious about that study. Some of the vehicles use what amounts to the exact same nav software and hardware for all intents and purposes and have widely differing scores. Alot of the Lexus units are really the same units packaged up slightly differently depending on if it's an IS or an LS for example (however, the IS is newer than the LS, so might have an updated system). there might be small differences in the design and integration of different vehicles using the similar nav software/hardware that might amount to a big difference in survey scores, but it'd be interesting is rather than scoring by car model, they scored by software and hardware manufacturer similarities, although with OEM parts, that might be sorta hard.
A friend of mine just picked up a new Honda CRV with Navi.. and the G35 is far superior.
Dopey: there are some drastic changes from car model to car model even though the back-end software is the same. Control locations, features etc... all contribute. I think it's better done by car model then by software because the G35 is not the same as the Nissan Altima even though the software is the same. The g35 is much nicer of a system. Even the M by Infiniti has different controls and IMO are not as good as the G.
BTW - I'm not a Mercedes hater by any means, but I can say that I had an extra smile seeing that MB has the worst overall Navi system of any company. and BMW also rounded out as second worst overall on their version of a Navi. Beyond Machine baby!

BMW's and Mercedes Benz Navi. SUCK! I get really confused when I'm trying to enter something in them...So many buttons and options. I really love the G35's Navi. however
. The graphics are amazing aswell as the turn-by-turn direction.

Everyone whos driven in my car while the navi is working have all commented on how nice the turn-by-turn feature and the lane guidance is. I, for one, think the chime is a nice touch since I know exactly when to turn. That was something that'd confuse me on other navi systems while on heavy roads with plenty of streets......like NW DC.

No surprise about Mercedes. I have two Benz vehicles, and the navigations SUCK. In fact, my '03 Benz has a better nav system, one that is CD-based, than my '07 Benz. What a waste. They are a pain to use. Though I hear the new C-Class' nav system is great.
IMO, Infiniti's nav system is easily the best, hands down.
I know that it differs model to model. However, last year (or maybe two years ago) there was a specific manufacturer (I can't remember who) that had the exact same nav system, with the exact same interface (controls everything) in two different car models, and the two cars had drastically different ratings.
I found the article when I owned my IS300 and was reading about nav system ratings. I'm not saying that the IS and the LS have the same one, or the M and the G have the same exact unit. what I'm wondering is, do they now take that into account, because a few years ago, some people complained about that jd power didn't take that into account. I don't know about the 2007 list, and I have no idea if there are identical nav systems on any of the models listed. It's entirely possible that it was just a fluke that one year. Just sorta mental masturbation on my part

The nav system along with the location of the controls and overall interior is identical across the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, and Chrysler 300 models. According to the survey, the Dodge Charger got a score of 770, the Chrysler 300 got 739, and the Dodge Magnum wasn't even listed. That said, in comparison to my friend's nav system in his Magnum, the G's nav is in an entirely different league. Sugartits hasn't steered me wrong yet...yes, I named my nav system's voice...much more cordial that way. "In about a quarter of a mile, turn left on to Main Street"..."Thank you, Sugartits"...
