Interesting Roadtrip Incident
Just got back from a 1300 mile roundtrip for a "boys only" weekend in SW FL. Doubled the miles on my G. Car was awesome the whole trip. I hate driving long distances, but the G made it easy and enjoyable.
On the way back, I was driving up I-75 and was about a quarter mile from an underpass when I noticed a flock of about 20-30 white birds and one larger brown bird (hawk maybe?) doing weird spirals above the bridge. Just as I got to the underpass, the entire flock descended under the bridge right in front of me. All I see was a mess of white in front of me. Next thing I know – BAM – my left front bumper smashes into the brown bird. It was a terrible noise. The bird careens off to my left and lands with its feet to the sky completely still lying in the left hand shoulder.
I drive a few miles to the next exit and stop at a gas station. I’m so afraid to look at the car that I top off the gas tank before I inspect the damage. To my surprise, despite the loud impact, the car had no damage whatsoever…just a smear of already crushed bugs where the hawk hit. Who would have thought you could kill a bird of prey two feet off the ground.
A buddy told me that it was just as likely that the flock of white birds was chasing the hawk as it was the other way around. Now I feel sorta bad for him. At least it was quick.

Random addition... but there was a hawk just sitting on the yellow stripe of a 3 lane 1-way road on my way to work this morning.
He just sat there as the cars went by him at 40mph.
It almost looked like a statue setup on the road.

Many years ago (VW Jetta), was traveling down I-10 in Florida when a snowy egret picked a particularly bad time to take off across the highway. BAM - large impact on windshield, windshield wiper torn off.
Sadly, doubt he made it, but at least we and the car did.

I-190, a few years ago. I was driving along in my Toyota Tacoma that I kept in showroom perfect shape and a large bird swooped down from my left and across the highway. He put a large dent in the front left quarter panel and then smashed the driver's side mirror into the side window as he bounced off. He did quite a bit of damage.
Glad the G made it through okay!

Ha....I thought I was the only one. I'm not sure what it is about me and birds, but I hit them all the time. I've hit them with the bumper, the windshield, had one fly into my car through an open window (while doing 60mph)....that one was fun. And then I took out a whole flock one fall with a Uhaul truck. Luckily I haven't hit one in my G yet....but I know it's coming
Glad your G's okay. kinda feel sorry for the bird, but...
There are too many wild animals on the road in Florida. Especially, those armadillos..
OMG... They look so scary... First time I saw it, I thought it was a giant maggot crawling.

a few years ago we were heading down to rochester, mn on the highway in my IS300. My wife was driving. As we're driving down, we see a bird in the middle of the highway eating some roadkill. It looked up just in time for the car to hit it. We didn't actually know if we hit it, no impact bump, no noise nothing. I thought maybe it flew away in time even though I didn't see it.
Pull into a rest area a little bit later and I look, and there's the bird, stuck in the opening right next to the fog lamp
. No damage to the car, but the bird didn't quite make it.

Many Moons ago, while on a trip in Canada, late at night on the way back to our hotel, while driving on a desolate 2 lane "state" road, out of nowhere, a huge Owl swoops down from overhead and picks up a mouse or rat right off the road surface just in front of the car. I didn't hit it but, it was a close call for that Owl. The prey apparently was made visible by the car's headlights. The Owl was a cool customer, the driver wasn't. It scared the crap ofm since it happened so quickly......Man it was dark that night !!!
Coming home from work, a few years ago, I am on my Suzuki GSX1100G with sport windshield, and from right to left, a hen pheasant hit square in middle of windshield! without the WS it would have hit me right at chest height,, prolly going 65 mph or so,, all i could do was " brace for impact" pulled over checked, bike, windshield, shorts, all was good....
this reminds me of the one time i ran over a squirrel....i saw him run across this street and braked kinda hard to not hit him; well......he braked too!!!! well...next thing you know "bump bump" dead squirrel
