Is there a REAL performance advantage of the 2nd Gen over a 1st Gen sedans?

This maybe a very stupid question but while watching Youtube and saw this white First Generation G35 sedan beat a Second Generation G35 at the drag strip..and it was a BIG difference. It didn't sound nor looked modified...

From what I've been reading, the 1st generation car is about the same horsepower like 298 hp. Am I getting the information wrong?

i've 'heard' the 1st gen sedans are lighter than the 2nd gens. i'm still surprised to hear that it beat a 2nd gen though...did the video include any details on mods?

That is NOT a stock car.

There's only a slight difference between the 03-04 vs. 04-05 (20hp rated difference). 1/4 mile times are very close. Manual vs. auto would make more of a difference.

an 07+ will beat any of the older cars though (manual or auto). Test driving an 06 and and 07 auto back to back. It felt more like a 50hp difference. But, the .5 second or more in the 1/4 mile shows that same "feeling" I had.

I drove both back to back and the 2nd gen is faster but not as much as the HP numbers would make you think.

Having owned both, the second gen is much faster, nicer throttle response.

I had on 05 before my 08, and the 2nd gen is definitely faster. I liked the exhaust note of the 1st gen better though....

It's actually not 298 vs 306. 298 was based on old guidelines to rate HP. New guidelines changed and it was rated 306. Assuming the old engine was based on new guidelines it'd be significantly lower, or vice versa. I havn't seen anyone with the HP difference based on same guidelines though, I'd be interested to know too!

07+ are definitely faster, more responsive, and feel a lot more solid with the redesigned chassis.

lol sorry I confused myself reading my own words too. This explains better.

The '07 G35 sedan has an all new VQ35HR engine rated at 306hp at the crank. I'm not sure about all the changes, however, I do know the engine now has a dual intake system and a higher 7,500rpm redline. The entire exhaust system is also supposed to be freer flowing IIRC...

The 306hp rating is under the new SAE rating, so even though the '06 G35 coupe was rated at 298hp, the new rating would have been over 315hp under the old system.

And that thread has some dyno comparisons... funny how that thread was originally from g35 and now I linked it back

its always about the driver too and what track you'll run on.

the HP numbers might seem similar, but its the efficiency of the engine and how much power it actually puts down. the stock 2nd Gen 6MT's are probably putting down 260 WHP on a dyno...no stock 1st gen can come that close.
