Steering wheel drop problem

There is another, identical thread on this topic and one of the posters had his steering column replaced... which then opened an entirely different can of worms. In fairness, the poor guy seems to have been cursed with a "lemon".
It seems that there is a "normal" but barely perceptive amount of vertical play before the column locks in place. Once locked, it should be as solid as a rock (of course).
I am not sure I would feel comfortable with a dealership replacing factory-installed major components UNLESS absolutely necessary... each to his own, I guess.

Mine has always done it, no big deal. Certainly not worth having the dealership replace the column and god only knows messing up what else in the process just for a slight movement. Mine only moves a fraction of in inch a quarter inch seems like a lot more than I experience.
