What happens if the FOB gets smashed?

I was biking tonight and fell pretty hard (i ride trials if you were interested, if you don't know what it is, i would say go to youtube and look it up ASAP) and when I got back to my car, I tried to use the button on the door to unlock, and it wouldn't, then I figured maybe my key fell out. I reached in and found it, among my multi-tool and pulled my keys out to see only the back side of the FOB, I reach in again and pull out the computer chip which was stuck to the netting of my pocket (of course the thing that says do not touch was the thing that was caught) and I finally get the last piece, and put it all back together finding it works. But what if I fall and smash the board into multiple pieces and can't put it back together, can I still start the car by putting the pieces in the FOB keyhole or would I be screwed? I have to take it with me since it wont let you lock it in the car (while keeping the metal key).

You can always hide it outside your car. I used tohave spare keys for my car in a little bag with magnet under my car. You can do the same thing with your keyfob just have to make sure it is 2 feet away from the door so nobody can open it by just walking there and push the bottom.

Can you put the key in the gas filler door and lock the doors with the little key, thus locking the filler door?

You can leave the FOB in your car if you lock the doors from the inside.

What happens if the FOB gets smashed? Buy a new one.

OR

If you haven't swapped out your keys yet for the newer ones that won't crap out when near a cell phone with an incoming call, then go swap em out. I still haven't gotten my keys replaced yet...

The fuel filler door locks too, but I think he is more concerned with using the fob to start the car than simply opening the door the metal key. I guess you could remove the battery from the fob and lock it in the glove box.

If the intelligent key fob's main board is physically damaged you will probably need to call roadside assistance or have someone bring you your other key.

You trials guys are nuts, I stick with x-country

Any reason you can't attach it to your bike? Not sure of your setup, but if it's in a seat bag or something like that it would be unlikely to get damaged? Or take the battery out as someone suggested, although that's a pain.

Agree with Christian, if the fob gets smashed chances are you are SOL in starting the car.

lol at your seat comment, my bike doesn't have a seat or even a hole to put a seat post in, taking the battery out would be a pain.

i might have to try locking it in the gas cap but hopefully that isn't close enough where it would unlock or start the car. someone has started my car while the keys were outside (didn't think it was supposed to)

I was lucky the board wasn't damaged, i'm used to my old car not even having remote entry so i have never been worried about the keys in my pocket.

if you lock the FOB in the car by pressing the lock button on the inside of the door, can you unlock the car by pressing the button on the door handle? i guess i can go try it out, thanks for the ideas guys!

No, you will have to keep the metal key inside of the FOB on you. Otherwise, you will have locked yourself out. I was wrong about pressing the lock button on the inside of the door. Just leave the FOB in the car, use the metal key to lock the car. The alarm even sets when you do so.

Speaking of all this - isn't there a way to start the car without the fob? Like a place you can insert the small metal key in order to use the push-button start? That way if the fob were destroyed you could still drive? Has something to do with the valet key or something like that.
