How does BMW allow you to open the trunk without the key? Is there a latch that's "locked/unlocked" along with the doors?

Put the ikey in your pocket and leave it there. What is so difficult?
The problem is the Bimmer needs the key fob to be inserted into the key port (why not just have a regular key).

Just leave the Inf I-key in your pocket, its an advaced system compared to the German engineering.

First off, I could have done without the smart comments from a select few of you. Seriously.

To those that genuinely posted, thank you for your feedback. A special acknowledgment to "shipsaeki" who actually made me laugh out loud.

Perhaps I should have been a little more clear. THis is my first experience with a key FOB. My XI of 5 years did not have one, it had a regular key. Therefore, this is probably just part of the learning curve of having my car less than two months.

Anyway, it's a fantastic car and has every creature comfort that my beamer lacked. Even when recently test driving the new 2008 328XI's, the G35x was still so much more car for the money.

FWIW, if you want to have a laugh..... go to the Bimmer forums and keep calling your car a "beamer."

I gave up that argument a long time ago! I called it the correct name "bimmer" for teh first few years. then i finally gave up "bimmer" for "beamer" b/c everyone looked at me like i had two heads... and i got tired of explaining the correct lexicon.

It's just one of those things... if you cant beat em', join em'

If you want to pop the trunk with the car unlocked and no key, you have to use the trunk release button on the dash beside the VDC off switch by the drivers left knee. I have had to do it many times when I have left the FOB in the house.

With the e90 3-series as long as the doors are unlocked your able to just walk up and open the truck. It's just a matter of being used to doing something one particular way in my case. I have a habit of pulling in the garage and leaving my bags in the trunk...later that night I'll go out and get my bags..with the BMW I didn't need to grab my FOB since the car is unlocked...with the G35 I have to grab my FOB or push the button inside the car or on the FOB. It's not that big of a deal but once your used to doing something a particular way it almost seems inconvenient to need the FOB or push buttons to get into the trunk of an unlocked car.

This is incorrect for newer generation BMWs with Comfort Access. You can open the trunk as long as you have the FOB on you or the doors are unlocked.

Thinking about it more, I could see how this would be convenient. Like if the passenger wants to open the trunk.

But, being able to do anything without a key decreases security IMO.

For example, in my last car, if you lock the car with the remote, you cannot unlock the car using the unlock button inside the car. This was nice if I had the ttops out and went into the store. Someone couldn't just reach over and unlock the doors.

Thank you Glockz! That's exactly what i was talking about. It's not being lazy, it's just a 5 year habit with my E46. Only I do the reverse. I pull into my 2 car garage, take out my stuff and go inside. Later that night i want to put my gym bag and briefcase back in my trunk for the next day, and I'm not used to taking the FOB with me to have to unlock the trunk.

Comfort Access is a $750 ($500 in the US) option which starts from the 328 up. You can't even get it on the base 323.
Just another nice feature that BMW nickel & dimes you for.
I didn't have to pay any extra for a it on my G35 so I'll gladly take it the way it is.

If the car is unlocked, like others have mentioned, you just open the door and pop the trunk. It's just one more step. No key needed.

I think he was refering to starting the car. Might as well be a key if you still need to insert the fob in. I know this was the case then, but they might've updated now?

1. Isn't there a way, when the car is unlocked and the key FOB is not on you to open the trunk while your standing at the trunk? My former beamer could.

2. Also can you turn off the beep it does several times every time the trunk opens?
my '88 300E was able to do this too. It takes more technology and ingenuity to get what our Infiniti's do with the fobs rather than, "hey the doors are unlocked so now you can press a button on the trunk and open it"

It's still the same. I detailed a brand new 328xi last weekend and had to put the fob in the slot before pressing the start button. I'll take my i-key over that any day.
